    Play a 1280x720 game in a 3840x2180 window -- How?


    My display resolution is 3840x2160.

    My Windows is Win-10 v.1803.


    Myst 3 is a game that runs in a wrapper named 'residualvm.exe'.

    The settings file is named 'myst3.ini'.

    'myst3.ini' has 2 directives of interest:

    fullscreen=true // ...... or false

    fullscreen_res=1280x720 // ...... or anything else I want, but 1280x720 is best.


    What currently happens: The 1280x720 game image is black-matted to 3840x2160. This means that the game is not scaled up, and it also means that the mouse cursor is not scaled up. That leaves the mouse cursor so small that it can't be seen. That makes the game unplayable.


    Win-10 settings of interest are:

    residualvm.exe 'Properties', _/Compatibility\_, [Change high DPI settings], 'Program DPI'
    residualvm.exe 'Properties', _/Compatibility\_, [Change high DPI settings], 'High DPI scaling override'

    I have not found a combination of settings that will cause the 1280x720 game image to be scaled up to 3840x2160.


    Is Windows High DPI broken?

    Can you suggest a next thing to try?

    Is the format of the binary metadata of this registry key documented anywhere?

    PPS: This did work one time, then Windows spontaneously changed something and broke it the next time I tried to play the game.

    • Are you playing the game online or offline?


    I suggest you to try installing the game in compatibility mode and check:

    Follow these steps to install the game in compatibility mode.


    • Download the game from the manufacturer’s website.

    • Right-click on the game setup file and click on
      ‘properties’.

    • Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box
      ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 10 from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

    BSOD When playing games

    Please share the information requested below:

    • Does the BSOD occur while playing a particular game?
    • Is the game downloaded from Windows Store?

    I suggest you to update the Graphic Card drivers by following the steps provided below and check if it helps.

    • Press Windows key + X, select Device Manager.
    • Expand Display Adapters.
    • Right click on the driver and select Update Driver Software.
    • Follow the on-screen prompts to update.

    Play a 1280x720 game in a 3840x2180 window -- How?

    Resolution 1280x720 in games with Sapphire X800GTO.

    When I use my Sanyo PLV-Z2 projector on my computer, the choice of resolution 1280x720 doesn't appear as a choice in Display setting. I can however force this setting from Catalyst Control Center, and it works fine with Windows. But in games like GT-Legends and MS Flight Sim. 2004 the 1280x720 resolution is not present. Do anybody have a clue?

    (Have tried both theese games with a CRT-monitor, and then the 1280x720 resolution appears, so I know that the games supports it)
