Please help! Laptop integrated display will not use Nvidia, but will use it on external...

I have an alienware laptop with a qled display and nvidia 3070 rtx. It's always worked fine, but for the last year, I had it connected to an external display for gaming. I recently bought a desktop and gave the laptop to my son. Now when he tries to play games using the integrated monitor, the fps is horrendous. When i pull up the nvidia control panel, and go to display mode, it has Nvidia option gray'd out and forces "Optimus". It states that the reasoning is because "an external display is connected, or laptop is in DC mode." Both of these are not the case as it's definitely plugged in

    :)

  2. How to connect external display to the dedicated GPU instead of integrated GPU in laptop

Hello! My name is Mostafa, and I will try my best to assist you with this so that you find a satisfactory solution.

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue. When you connect an external monitor to your laptop during a heavy task, it should automatically switch.

    Please follow the steps below:

    1. Right-click on the desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Panel" from the menu.

    2. In the NVIDIA Control Panel, click on "Configure Surround, PhysX."

    3. Under the "PhysX Settings" tab, select your external display from the drop-down menu under "Display."

    4. In the same window, under "PhysX Configuration," select "Auto-select (recommended)."

    5. Click "Apply" to save your changes and close the NVIDIA Control Panel.

    6. Restart your laptop to apply the changes.

Ensure you have updated your GPU to the latest version and your Monitor support G-sync.

You can disable integrated GPU by going to Device Manager.

I hope the above steps helped you. In case of additional questions, reach out back to me, and I will be happy to help and try my best to resolve your issue. Thank you.

    Best,

    Mostafa

    Projecting to an external display

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Windows 10.

I understand that you are unable to use external display with windows 10.

This usually occurs if the video driver was not installed properly or not configured correctly.so I would suggest you to reinstall the drivers in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and see if it helps:

    Uninstall Display Adapter drivers

I suggest you to uninstall the display drivers and reinstall them in compatibility mode.

To uninstall the driver, follow the steps below:

    • Press Windows key + R
    • Type devmgmt.msc
    • Right click on the driver you want to uninstall
    • Click on Uninstall
    • Restart the system
After the computer restarts, install the driver in compatibility mode.

    • Select the setup file
    • Right click on it and click on
      properties
    • Click on Compatibility tab
    • Select the operating system
    • Click Ok.
Hope it helps, do get back to us if you need further assistance with Windows.

MSI Laptop monitor uses integrated graphics vice NVIDIA card

I have an MSI laptop with a 120hz-capable monitor and a NVIDIA GTX 1060. Unfortunately, the monitor is using the integrated graphics card for the display instead of the NVIDIA card. How do I force it to use the NVIDIA card for the display instead of the integrated graphics card?

Issues I'm seeing: This force-limits my refresh rate to 60hz and causes noticeable visual performance issues in everyday applications on Windows (e.g., the screen lags when dragging an Excel 2016 window across the screen)

Observations: I dual-booted into Ubuntu and the screen refresh rate is now 120hz. So, since it works on Ubuntu but not on Windows (by default), I know this should be solvable at the O/S-level.

    Similar questions that I've reviewed/attempted:

    1. I have a NVIDIA GeForce graphics card as well as an integrated Intel HD graphics card
    2. Integrated graphics card being used over NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M in Toshiba laptop?
    3. Can I force Steam to use my Nvidia GPU instead of the integrated Intel card?
    4. No way my laptop will use nVidia chip instead of integrated graphics
