A group of floating gray boxes appear at the top of the desktop in Windows 11 when a window for any app is moved to the top of the screen. Please can anyone tell what they are, why they're there, and most importantly, how to disable them from appearing? It's another Windows annoyance feature, similar to imposition of forced by Microsoft developers "Recommended' list in place of the desired "recent files" list on the Start menu, and the now disabled by Microsoft developers Start menu's listing of installed apps.I'm including a screen shot to make it as clear as possible. I'm unable to get

Gray X's on Desktop files appearing

Gray X's have recently started appearing on all of the files and folders I have placed on my Windows 10 desktop.

Please help me to disable the gray boxes that appear at the top of the Windows 11 desktop 117500d1485975883t-gray-xs-desktop-files-appearing-grey-x-examples.jpg

The X's are in the lower left corner of the icon.. They only appear on icons belonging to actual files or folders saved on the desktop. (Not on shortcuts to other locations.)

Examples would include: Excel files, PDF files, JPG files, folders actually residing on the desktop, text files, etc. The appearance of the "X's" have not interfered with my ability to access the files. This does NOT occur any place else (other folders on my hard drive, etc.) other than on the desktop.

Logging out as a User or rebooting does solve the issue for 1-2 minutes once I am logged back in, but then they reappear.

Doing a screen refresh does nothing. Right-clicking on the file (or folder) and resetting the default program to open the file (or folder) does nothing.

I have not recently installed any new back-up programs.

Deleting the Desktop DataBase in the Registry does not help.

Any suggestions or known solutions would be most appreciated!

Gray box on screen, Windows 11

    Hi Jack

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

There were some problems with this feature reported by many people in Windows 11, there is currently no permanent fix, but the good news is, in the upcoming 22h2 (Sun Valley 2) update, that functionality has been re-engineered and that gray box no longer appears in the new version,
