Windows 10: Plugged in second monitor, computer stopped providing signal to both monitors

As soon as I plugged in the second monitor, signal dropped from my primary monitor, and I have since been unable to recover it. Even when I unplugged the second monitor, signal will not return to the primary one. I tried plugging my TV into the computer and still, nothing. or when i connect the VGA for primary monitor and HDMI for TV, it worked fine before but someone clicked display on 2 only so now i cant see anything when i plug the HDMI

Second Monitor has No Signal

I recently updated my computer to windows 10 and bought new monitors but I can't get my second monitor to receive any signal. One monitor is connected directly to my vga port but the other monitor is plugged into a DVI-I port with a vga to DVI-I adapter.
My desktop recognizes that there is a second monitor and I've checked both the cords and the adapter for the monitor several times. I've looked at several forums and tried every setting I can think of but even though the monitor is set to extended it still
doesn't get any signal even though windows can be dragged into that monitor.

• What is the make and model of your computer?
• Did you try to check if the second monitor will work if installed as the primary monitor?
• Aside from checking the cables, did you try to use a different cable?
• Are the right monitor drivers installed on your computer?
• Does your video card has the right settings for using two monitors?
• Did you update your video card driver?

Second Monitor has No Signal

My computer is a dell XPS 8700 desktop 3.6GHz with 8GB of RAM. Unfortunately I have chacked to seeif the second monitor will work if installed as the main monitor but the monitor wont get signal unless it is plugged directly into the vga port. I have tried
different cables with the same problem and as far as i can tell, when i checked and updated the drivers I had the correct ones. I'm not sure if my video card has the right settings for two monitors but I did have the NVIDIA control panel set to two monitors
on extend. I have updated my video card driver and all device property menus say that both my monitors are running correctly with no problems.
