Plugging in and removing earphones to laptop causes audio source to flip back and forth...

My current set-up consists of my laptop plugged into a monitor via HDMI. This monitor has it's own speakers that are atrociously bad quality, so my theoretical choices for audio output are:

    1. My monitor integrated speakers, listed as: "IntelR Display Audio"

    2. My laptop speakers

    3. My earphones, through laptop headphone jack.

Due to some reason I also can't explain, both my laptop speakers and earphones both get displayed as "Speakers Realtek High Definition AudioSST", the laptop makes no distinction between whether or not that is the earphones or the laptop speakers, there is no separate device listed when they are plugged in.

So, due to the awful sound quality of the monitor, as mentioned, I went ahead and disabled the Display Audio devices in Sound Settings, because I only ever want to be playing from either the laptop or the earphones, but lately can't quite remember when it started, whenever I have the laptop plugged into the monitor, and I either plug in OR unplug my earphones, for about 15 seconds or so, the output device starts flickering between the monitor speakers and the laptop speakers/earphones. If I have music playing, it literally starts flickering between the two speakers as well and it is quite frustrating.

When I look at the sound settings to display output devices, the monitor speakers are literally appearing and disappearing as a SECOND "IntelR Display Audio" in addition to the one that I already have listed as disabled.

Any ideas? Thanks for your time!

    :)

By dirty connection, the laptop audio jack? The earphones I currently use is just new, arrived yesterday. And both earphones I used for testing has 4 zones.

    Dirty connection, maybe!?

Could be a 3-zone vs 4-zone thing as well, as phones utilize the additional zone for media controls, whereas the laptop may not...
