  1. PNG files don't scale with Display Scaling in Windows Photo Viewer

I have two 4k monitors, so I have Windows display scaling at 150%. The only problem is that PNGs have begun acting a little off in Windows Photo Viewer. I've attached an image of two of the exact same file, only I re-saved one as a PNG (on the left). As you can see, the PNG doesn't scale at all, while the JPG is much larger and perfectly viewable.

Does anyone know how I can fix this or what registry setting I can adjust? Windows Photo Viewer isn't exactly an application with settings. Worth noting it didn't do this until about a week ago when I tried to fix the order Windows 10 displays image files, so maybe even just showing me how the pngfile registry entry should look might help? Not positive.

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Windows Photo Viewer Disable DPI Scaling (Slideshow High DPI problem)

When viewing a slideshow (fullscreen) (F11) with Windows photo viewer at 150% DPI Scaling on a 4K monitor only part of the image is shown! The DPI scaling should be ignored when fullscreen. Anyone knows how to fix this bug??

The strange thing is that with PNG and JPG images Photo Viewer starts with DPI scaling.

However when opening a BMP photo viewer starts without DPI scaling and full screen slideshow works fine.

So a better question would be how to always start photo viewer without DPI scaling.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately it's a dll and compatibility settings are not available...

  3. Photos / Edit Stopped Working

    Here's the answer!

In Display Settings, you can use Custom scaling.

    When Photos/Edit wasn't working, I had it set to 138, trying to get my zoom in-between 125 & 150.

Today, I removed the Custom scaling, setting the scale to 175% (again: outside of Custom scaling).

    Photos/Edit started working!

Then I went back to a Custom scaling (of 138%): Photos/Edit stopped working.

Use a better tool like Gimp. Photo Viewer is a basic tool that is not meant for graphic manipulation.

  5. I use Photoshop for manipulation. I literally just use Photo Viewer to view images because it's lightweight and simple. I just want all file types to scale equally.

In Windows 10, Microsoft has virtually mothballed "legacy" Windows Photo Viewer in favour of their "modern" Photos App.

It is necessary to reinstate the registry entries for Windows 8.1 Windows Photo Viewer in order to get the program working fully.

As is the case for much of Windows inbuilt functionality, the possible registry settings for full manipulation of utilities and applets remain undocumented and hidden in obscurity.

If you expect Microsoft to fix any bugs in the program, or for anyone to reveal Microsoft's deeply hidden settings to enable you to tweak the programs, you may be in for a long wait.

When folk start revealing too much of the mechanics under the hood of Windows that make it tick, Microsoft make them an offer they can't refuse - Mark Russinovich & Bryce Cogswell of Winternals, now known as the Microsoft Technet brand of Sysinternals are a prime example of this.

  7. You could try a different file viewer program.

One of the first programs I install on any Windows install is IrfanView (I've used it for >12 years).

If you install the plugin pack, it can handle sound, video and various document types, in addition to images.

But how old is that version of PS? Gimp blows it out of the water, because it is a very good graphics and photo manipulation package.
