Windows 10: Posibble to use a second Surface as a portrait oriented wireless display?

At home, and at the office, I have the same set up, two portrait oriented monitors side by side above my surface, set up as extensions to my Surface screen so mouse movements track across the three as if they're one work space. I am now really used to being able to look at word documents and pdfs, etc. as complete documents at full scale or larger. Even when I'm working in coffee shops/hotels/airports, I'd like to be able to pop out a second display, put it on a tablet mount (I have a couple that hold a surface perfectly, both with heavy bases and then a swan neck, adjustable stem that holds the surface so it's bottom edge is about 12cm/5" above the table I'm working at.

I switch on Surface 2 (the surface I want to use as a display) and make sure it's portrait oriented, either by setting the display manually to be portrait or by positioning the display in portrait orientation (I've tried both, multiple times). Then I use the project to this PC option in settings to launch the Surface as a wireless display.)

I go to Surface 1, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, click on the project tile, select the bottom option, Connect to a wireless display, and then Surface 2 starts to work as a wireless display.

However the content on the screen is not as I would expect - I get a horizontally oriented display in a letter box with huge black borders top and bottom. The actual display area is about 40% of the available display area. If I right click on Surface 1's desktop background and select Display settings, the 'rearrange displays' area of the settings window shows two horizontal displays one above the other. If I select Display 2 (Surface 2) and change its orientation from horizontal to Landscape, what shows on the wireless display is 'portrait' after a fashion, but it's actually just portrait oriented content inside the 'letter box' (i.e. on it's side!)

I want to know if it's possible to set up Surface 2 as a Portrait oriented display or not. Any help gratefully received.

Hi,

There's an option on Windows 10 to switch between landscape and portrait orientation. We recommend following these steps on how to switch the screen orientation from portrait to landscape:

• On Cortana search, type display settings.
• Choose Display settings from the list.
• Under Orientation, select on Landscape and click
  Apply.

Display rotation in Portrait Orientation Windows 10

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I would like to inform that in the Portrait orientation, the display will turn to 90 degrees. It is by design and no changes can be made. You can change the screen resolution to 1024*768 which will change the display to a Portrait like view in vertical position.
Also, I suggest you to provide a Feedback using the Feedback App.
