    Possible HDD imminent failure & whether or not to clone


    It turns out I was able to set the BIOS to AHCI after all.
    My BIOS setting was set to SATA Evaluation: IDE and I didn't see an option to select AHCI
    I was expecting to see other options than SATA Evaluation: IDE when pressing Enter
    Today I tried the arrow buttons and AHCI was there.
    So the combination of using those instructions for registry changes and a learning curve from me of working in the BIOS and your support turned out very well.
    Since my computer runs very good I don't think I'll experiment doing a fresh install; I'll wait to experiment on my friends computer when I get back to his house.
    Bottom line: Problem solved

    OTOH ....If you run chkdsk /r in cmd. which implies /f and restart and let it run and you get bad clusters and or sectors or accumulating same between 2 different checks run don't walk and get a new HDD or SSD .


    You will see the results at the end of the test or in event viewer >applications > winninit . and failing HDD will often set bad bloc critical errors in event viewer .


    You can do this long test daig /attempt repair /surface scan in windows without a third party program at all with plausible results and no software can *really fix a bad HDD or controller beyond corrupted files which a clean install or this test chkdsk /r cmd can usually fix .

    FWIW nothing is like a clean install on a properly working boot drive I clean installed this 14915 .rs2 SSD drive last night.

    I clean install every other winbeta like that from an ESD I make media from that I save out of the newBuild WU download > $WINDOWS.~BT folder and I did all that to the other 3 PCs here after the AU also but this PC is brand new , I just rolled in the AU on its OEM metal for now *Cool
