Windows 10: Possible in Explorer to sort files by date, but folders by name in same pane?

I believe this is not possible, and hasn't changed since Windows Vista or 7, but figured I'll ask and maybe learn something new in Windows 11. I know that I can sort files by date and folders appear above them by clicking on the "Date modified" column heading, then while holding Shift key, click on the Name column heading, which causes folders to appear at the top about the date-sorted file list. So close. The only problem with this is that folders are sorted by date too. Is there any way to get the folders to appear sorted by name, while maintaining that the file list below them remains sorte

Sort by date added to folder

Hi there, thanks for your question.

In File Explorer, all sorting options can be viewed by following these steps:

- Open the folder and right click inside of it, not on a file.

- Go to Sort by > More.

This brings up a list of all possibilities of what to sort by. It doesn't look like there's an options for "date added to folder", but one of the other Date options may help, such as Date Created. You could create a copy of the file and move it in, so that
the date created matches the date added to the folder?

You can filter the folders and files in File Explorer using the Sort by option. To best address your concern, we need you to answer the following questions:

• What do you mean when you mentioned “files sorted by latest first”?
• You mentioned that you were able to perform it before, which Windows version were you using that time?
• Can you provide us a detailed description of what you would like to perform?

In the meantime, you can try the following steps:

• Go to File Explorer.
• Click the Drive where the files and folders are saved.
• Under Current view, click Sort by.
• Select Name if you would like to sort it alphabetically. Choose
  Date modified or Date created if you wanted to sort it by date. Refer to the image below.

Please take note that you can’t apply two filters at a time.

Can Win Explorer show: A) folders alpha order B) Files by date order?

The left (folder) pane sorts by name (I don't think it can be changed), so you could just set the RH pane to sort by date and see what you want. It seems that if you set the date sort to ascending (earliest first) you get the folders first:



and if you sort newest first you get files, then folders:


so you can see your folders alpabetically on the left, and files (most recent first) on the right, with the folder list you don't want out of site at the bottom. Note that the latter seems to be the case even when a folder has a more recent modified date. I have never noticed this behaviour, so it may not be consistent.

Not what you were asking for, but I don't think that is possible. Martin
