Im concern that the process indicated by the blue arrow in the picture may be malware but I'm not sure how it got there or how to remove it. I believe it's malware because it's not signed by Microsoft, and when I tried to check its properties, I couldn’t access them or terminate the process. I’ve already scanned my desktop with Windows Defender, but it didn’t detect anything. I have a lingering suspicion that this might be some kind of spyware or even stalkerware because my online activities seem to be getting back to my employer and coworkers. Additionally, when I watch videos on YouTube, I f

Windows Defender should always be running in the background, should always start up and run each time the computer is turned on or awakened from sleep mode and it should be running in task manager any time the computer is on.

I haven't run a full scan in several months...Windows Defender automatically runs a weekly quick scan which searches the most likely locations for malware.

Some users (myself included) run an occasional scan (every month or so) with an independent scanner such as the ones listed in List
    of Malware Removal Tools

I ran the Emsisoft Emergency Kit last month to see if Windows Defender had missed anything. There was no malware detected.

No one has suggested actually running a virus/malware scan. Malwarebytes scan to eliminate possible infection running in the background.

    Background applications

    Hi Robert,

We understand that you don't want some apps to run on the background of your computer. What we suggest is to
control which apps are allowed to run in the background. To see which apps have permission, just follow the below steps:

    • Open the Start menu or Start screen and select “Settings.”
    • Click or tap the “Privacy” icon in the Settings.
    • Scroll down to the bottom of the list and select “Background apps.”
    • You’ll see a list of apps that have permission to run in the background with an “On/Off” toggle.
Just bear in mind that, apps normally run in the background to update their live tiles, download new data, and receive notifications. If you want an app to continue performing these functions, you should allow it to continue running in
    the background.

Feel free to update us with the results.
