Thanks bruh. I'll just keep working at it, and if I find a resolution, I'll post it.

    Thanks again.

I think I posted this before, I might be barking up the wrong tree for what you're after though.

I swapped cables in back, port for port,

dragged the array to what I wanted and made 1 'My Main Display':

  6. Personally I don't really care what number my monitors get. The only time I look at that screen is after a clean install and I'm rearranging them to match my physical layout. Mine are 3 1 2, (DVI 2, HDMI, DVI 1). I have 1 set as my main display. Any App and or program I open, move to a display, and then close; remembers what display it was last opened on. The next time I launch it, it opens on the display it was last opened on. The only exception is if I launch something from the taskbar on that monitor, like Settings. The only thing setting monitor 1 as main does for me is set that as my main taskbar. That's the only taskbar that shows pined items. The other two only show the *Start and Cortana, and what is open on that monitor at that time.

  7. I have same issue, and it trips my OCD every now and then and in 5+ years I never been able to fiqure out fix for this. i spent 8 hours trying to fiqure this out today but I and gave up again

As soon as my HDTV-Hdmi is connected my Dvi-Monitor that was identified as 1 is now identified as 2 and HDTV-Hdmi becomes identity 1

This a a result make win key + p act as followed

IF Dvi monitor is only connected
Dvi Moniotor = PC screen only

IF Dvi monitor and HDTV-Hdmi is connect
Dvi Monitor = Second screen only
    HDTV-Hdmi = PC screen only

This either windows issue or driver(nvidia) issue but i never uninstalled nvidia drivers and plug both monitors in 1 at time to see if same thing happens. it is also possible this behavior is coded in to the FW for gpu's

Well, it's not coded into the firmware. I have done a number of these multi-display installations, and only have this issue on a very few. But where it exists, it does seem to be hard coded into the system. NOTHING makes a difference. HDMI always comes up "1". I've just let it go. I follow the stupid system. I hate it, but I just march along!

  9. yah like I said it triggers my OCD every now and then and I go on "crusade" to try and fix it, I never been able too it not "issue" just cosmetic issue the my OCD dont like. I have learned for most part to just ignore it, I have enough things that trigger my OCD as it is

I recently opend up ticket with Nvidia again about this but i dont expect a fix I honestly thing it issue with windows

I'm working on a computer now that usually has 2 monitors connected, both on DVI with VGA adapters [don't know why, client's desire] and it seems to make a difference which port on the video card is used, one port takes priority over the other. It's easy for me to notice as one monitor is wide-screen and the other is not.

  11. sadly a 1070ti only has 1 dvi and 1 hdmi port so i cant do that, other 3 ports are display ports

next time I do clean install of windows I gona make sure hdtv is not connected when gpu at all during the install, not that it will make diffrence

  12. Too much argument! *Smile

Anyway, if I understand the OP correctly ... Windows is numbering his screens "wrong".
    Here's mine:

Possible to re-assign monitor identities/numbers? [IMG]

Display #2 on the left is my "main" screen, the one with the start button and task bar.
Why is that? It would make sense to call that #1, and other #2.
But I can't find a way to change it.

    IS THAT YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION?
If so, I can see why you refer to it as a "cosmetic" problem, not a "functional" problem.

Maybe, just maybe this could be "fixed" by swapping the cables on the graphics card?

Mine is a GTX 1060 with an HDMI port, a DVI port, and three Display Port connections.

I'm using the HDMI for one display, and a Display Port (with HDMI adapter cable) for the other.

If I swap those will that "fix" the problem? I don't know. (But I also don't care.) *Smile

No. The HDMI will be the dominate port. It works that way whether you use VGA, or DVI, as the "other" monitor. THAT'S the problem. It's the way the ports are configured. Like tsunami said, it's coded that way. F/W.

  14. Interesting.
That brings to mind my former computer. It had an ATI HD-5770 with dual DVI ports.
I had three monitors, but just two were used at any one time: two monitors on the desk, and the third nearby at an alternate table position.

I had a VGA switch so that the "main" Windows screen could be switched from the desk-based monitor to the third/alternate monitor.
The second monitor on the desk was always live, connected via DVI.

Well ... the driver (or Windows 7 ?) wouldn't allow that! If you use one monitor on VGA and the other on DVI, the DVI monitor was dominant. It HAD TO SHOW the main windows screen. Since my switch was on the VGA connection, that screen was the "second" screen. No good!

That problem did not exist if BOTH monitors were on VGA, or if both were on DVI. But I didn't own a DVI switch. I only had a VGA switch.

So I looked for a DVI switch. They were crazy-priced at $150 at the time (around 2013). So instead I just changed the second desk-based monitor to VGA (using a DVI/VGA adapter on the graphics card socket). With both monitors on VGA I could make either one the "main" screen. Solved.

I think it rather sucks that the card (or the driver) forces such things.

BTW, I have the same three-monitor setup now, but with a new Win 10 desktop. This one has 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 3 Display Ports. I can make either monitor the "main" screen, so no worries.

  15. like i said I think it hard code in to FW in GPU and difference manufactures IE Asus,Evga, MSI etc assign the identification to the port
