Windows 10: Post-update desktop stays black for a while before appearing

Hi everyone,

So my laptop (an HP Pavillion 2-in-1 that I purchased only a few months ago) went through a routine update about two days ago. Since then, every time I start it up, the initial login page appears, and I'm able to put in my password to unlock it, but the desktop won't load. It's just a black screen with the mouse's white arrow just hovering in the middle of nothing. If I wait a little bit, like 10-15 minutes, when I log in again the desktop appears with no problem. I don't know if this is just a bug from the recent update, or if something else has gone wrong. Everything else works just fine; it's just worrisome that the desktop is behaving in such a strange way!

Does anyone know whether I might be able to fix this or not?

Since the new Windows 10 update (2016), my computer screen turns black after being idle

I just updated my Windows and the Desktop was black upon startup.. when I put an image as desktop background it stays for 5 sec and then fades to black again The fading looks as if it does it on purpose and not as an error.. Everything works but my desktop
stays black..

 

Starting Windows After Latest Update

Whenever I update it can take 10-20 minutes of black screen before the desktop appears, that’s when it’s running the desktop update.

How long have you left the screen before turning the PC off?

 

I'm having same problem. I have a HP Pavilion Laptop. Have to restart a couple of times.

 

Does your device have nVidia graphics card? Mine did the same black screen after updating, I found I could open task manager so tried closing all instances of nVidia but even though that had worked previously it didn't this time. In the end I restarted in safe mode (hold shift & then click restart) & uninstalled the driver & no problem with black screen. Driver reinstalled itself with no further problems.

 

No, I don't think my graphics card is nVidia. According to Best Buy it has an Intel HD Graphics 620 card. Would that make a difference?

 

Some devices have dual graphics. It may be the drivers require updating.
