  2. Power outage forced me to reinstall windows 11, now Backup and Restore will not work

    Shortest story I can tell:
My original problem was a Power outage resulted in my computer being unable to boot past the log in screen. So I needed to reinstall Windows 11 on my C: Drive. But before I came to that conclusion I attempted several methods to diagnose and restore my computer, files, and preferences as I did not want to reinstall the OS or worse (details in 2nd list). My system has 5 Hard drives (Video Editor). C drive is solely for OS and certain programs. My F Drive is a 10 TB hard drive I use only for System restore and backups. After attempting several methods, I resigned to go through a full reinstall. After I reinstalled windows I tried to connect everything back up and reinstall my preferences from the Backup drive. (detail in 2nd list). I was unable to recover preferences and unable to use any information from my Backup drive's restore points.

    My problem:

Where I am now is I have reinstalled windows and got my system back to where I had it. Except I still have not been able to reconnect and make use of 'Back Up and Restore', 'System Images', 'File History', or really any back up programs native to Windows at all. I encounter roadblocks at everything I try. So I'm kind of stuck. I went so far as to completely format the 10 TB hard drive which didn't help.

    Sidenote:

I cannot upload or attach images / screenshots. It says image inserted successfully, but I cannot see them and the file upload says "Files Failed to upload." I have many screenshots and photos if necessary.

What I am experiencing while trying to fix this problem:
Right now I'm stuck in a loop where whatever I try to change Backup and Restore constantly says these things:

    • "The last backup did not complete successfully"
    • More information says: "A shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. Details: Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data."
    • The drive selected is my newly formatted F drive which has 10 TB free.
    • I also opened up 'System Properties' then 'System Protection' tab. I have each drive configured to have protection on. Each drive has 10% and my F drive has 40% selected. I also went through each drive and deleted all restore points in case there was data interfering with these programs.
      • "Full disclaimer, I have no idea what these setting are supposed to mean. I'm not sure if it means each drive will store its own restore points. Personally I would like all restore and back up info on the F drive.
    • After I get the shadow copy error, I click 'Change backup settings'.
      • I've tried different harddrives
      • Tried choosing my own info to back up and letting windows recommended.
      • After this, the Backup and Restore immediately changes to a yellow status, with the message "Your last backup did not complete successfully. Your files have not been backed up".
      • I think possibly I just need to run a manual backup and try 'Back up now'
      • This attempts to start and fails after about 30 seconds.
    • I have tried all my drives.
    • Tried System image.
      • This gives me a very long error message
      • "There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. Make sure, for all volumes to be backup up, the minimum required disk space for shadow copy creation is available, this applies to both the backup storage destination and volumes included in the backup. Minimum requirement: For volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended: At least 1 gigabyte of free disk space on each volume if volume size is more than 1 gigabyte. (0x80780119)"
      • I have WAY more disk space than is required on all drives.
      • Even when I ask for it to just the C drive. Or less.
      • When i have all the drives I want selected, it says it needs 2.21 TB.
    • Tried System repair disc.
    • Tried File History
      • This gives me a different error "File History doesn't recognize this drive."
      • I try all other drives yielding the same message.
      • It also says "Backup (F:/) Unknown Error"

What I think the problem is:

I think that when I was trying to recover my system in the very beginning, the "bcdedit /export c:\bcdbackup" through "bootrec /rebuildbcd" messed up the F:/ harddrive I was trying to recover from. The "bcd.old" file was located on the F drive and not the C drive later on. I can't find the other article / forum I read on that issue but people have brought up the issues I'm running into alongside these commands. If it is this, I have no idea how to customize the command prompt code to fit my machine to repair it. I absolutely overstepped my working knowledge trying to repair my machine with my skills and knowledge, but to be fair, I feel like I got pretty close to solving my issues. It might just have been a little damaging in the process.

All the other things I did, that could be relevant to why this is happening:

Here is all the steps I took from start to finish. I took photos at every step of the process and can likely elaborate where needed.

    • This was my first stop as my computer would Blue Screen right as I got to log in screen or before.
      • WerFault.exe has completely broken my pc
      • I used Command Prompt and tried these commands:
        • sfc /scannow
          • Scannow found corrupt files and was unable to fix them.
        • chkdsk X: /f
          • this said the file system was NTFS and cannot with it being write protected
          • I tried to use chkdsk on my other drives as well. chkdsk X: /c returned 'The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation'
        • bootrec /fixmbr
          • The operation completed successfully
        • bootrec /fixboot
          • Access is Denied
        • bootrec /scanos
          • Successful. Total identified windows installations: 0
        • bootrec /rebuildbcd
          • Successful. Total identified windows installations: 0
    • After those messages I looked up "Windows installations 0"
      • Total identified Windows installations: 0
      • This is where I tried what I think might be causing my issues right now.
        • bcdedit /export c:\bcdbackup
          • The operation completed successfully
        • attrib c:\boot\bcd -h -r -s
          • Path not found - C:\boot
          • This through me for a loop and later on I found the bcd.old file was located on the F drive an not the C Drive.
        • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
          • I still tried this, which is why I think that file was created on the F drive.
        • bootrec /rebuildbcd
          • I did not try this because I couldnt get the last step working.
      • Since the outcome here did not work I investigated more to see how to work through this:
      • 4 Solutions to Fix Total Identified Windows Installations: 0 Error
      • At this point The computer is still non functional so I am limited to using the Boot menu and the Windows 11 install usb.
      • How to Fix Path Not Found C:\boot Issue?
      • Im trying to find out why Path not found happened and did these commands:
        • chkdsk C: /f /r /x
        • I let this run, it went for an hour and I did not get any results or differences at all.
      • This was a dead end for me. So I resigned to just reinstall windows to get my computer working again.
    • After I reinstalled windows. I attempted to restore the files I wanted most directly which was the Appdata files and other preferences - Hindsight is 20/20 and I realize how stupid this idea later on. (My computer name, user name, and drive letters were all different while I tried this)
      • I obviously ran into issues during this.
      • So this did process did not work.
      • I changed the Drive letters back to the original ones I had (Not sure why they changed to begin with)
      • I reinstalled windows again to rename the computer and my user name.
      • I tried to set up System Restore here and Noticed all the issues I am still running into now.
      • As I was installing my programs again, my computer was still Blue Screening.
    • This is likely a separate issue from the problem im having now and is resolved. But I ran diagnostics on my RAM.
      • I discovered one of my 32gb RAM sticks was borked. And removed it.
      • No more bluescreens.
    • I ran CHKDSK overnight on my Back up 10 tb drive to see if it would find and/or repair the drive.
      • I also ran it on the C drive.
      • Both of them completed successfully.
      • Issues with CHKDSK errors, and blue screen errors
      • I also ran HD Tune Pro to see if HDs could have been messed up from the power outage or the things that I did.
      • All tests came back clear on error scans, benchmarks, and health.
    • At this point, I dont think the Harddrives have any errors that I can find.
    • I try to set up System restore, with no luck.
    • I moved on and installed all my programs and preferences, so that I can get back to work.
    • That is where I am now.

Windows XP PRO error after restore

System restore is handy when it works like it did for me 2 days ago saving the need to reinstall all of my software as well as windows, id suggest using norton Ghost 12 for an excellent system restore feature.
