    Power Supply Blew

Yesterday a resounding SNAP sound blasted out of the desktop and all response instantly died. The monitor still had powe rbut no video image.
Immediately to the repair shop for a new power supply but that did not produce a video response and an alternate video card was no better. It was concluded that the mother board had been effected.
Since I had replaced little items such as video card, wifi and usb3 psi board in recent past the replacement path looked to include cpu, motherboard, memory, power supply. All of these replacements are not likely to suit the original Win10 entitlement-so -a new Windows 10 Pro

Is it remotely possible to get a 'pass' and be accepted with this major change?

If it is then the SSD with existing Win10, software and my setup would slip in (Bob's Your Uncle etc)
Its a negative scene to think of redoing all the personal desktop settings.
All regular drives checked out when inserted into a dock but that dock didn't accept SSD drives. If the SSD got a shock then its a definite start over.
I have to discover more facts about using a dock. Products seemed to include that an SSD could be inserted as well as regular hdd.

The Ryzen 7-1700 and the I7-7700 look to be in the same price range but I haven't come across any reviews, reports that sing a song for either. Is there a Tenforum opinion on these motherboards?
(My computer usage is processing raw images and compiling mp4 videos alongside usual bookkeeping, doc. stuff)
Oh well, I had been idly thinking of replacing the 5 yr old box but I had expected it to be present when a new one came into existence <grin>

    :)

    Swap product keys between machines

I have a now deceased PC with Windows 10 Pro and a new laptop with Windows 10 Home. In the process of moving all my files to the new machine, the power supply of the old machine blew up. I'd like to swap the product keys and eventually resurrect the old
one. Is this easily done (the swapping I mean)?

  3. DistributedCOM Error event ID 10016

    Hi

I've finally got the answer as to why my machine was disolaying the error, a couple of weeks ago my

machines 450W PSU blew - it was because the GPU that I had was drawing more than the Power supply could

manage to supply and the machine was going down due to this and the error was the effect rather than the cause.

I have now upgraded to a 550W PSU and so far so good.

I hope that this helps some others of you that are experiencing the same problem.

Basic question as you say- is your disk still ok and do you have a disk image of it just in case (you may be aware we strongly recommend disk imaging).

Whether or not you have - or can create- a disk image may be relevant to one route to moving to a new PC, as commercial disk imaging software typically offers 'Restore to bare metal' - or 'deploy to new hardware'.

    E.g.
Re-deploying to new hardware - KnowledgeBase - Macrium Reflect Knowledgebase

I understand some users have simply let Windows get on with it, and tried booting from the disk in the new hardware configuration. I've not tried that personally.

    More e.g. here:
Can You Move a Windows Installation to Another Computer?

The licensing issue has been discussed a good number of times (many more threads) e.g.
HOW do I transfer windows (retail license) after upgrading to Windows - Windows 10 Forums
How do I transfer win 10 license to new computer? Upgrades involved - Windows 10 Forums

Storage HD reported healthy when checked via DOS commands while in the dock.
Yes there is a current Marcum Reflect system image stored on an external drive. The sad has not been checked like the 4 regular HD.

I picked up a 2 slot dock yesterday. It is a NexStar TX and 2 internal drives can be slipped into the connecting pins. These are my storage drives from the desktop so I have access to the projects in progress. I'm using my laptop.
The replacement parts have been selected and an order will go out. No one in these small towns keeps parts on hand so the repair will likely get into action next week.
The 15-7600 was the choice and an Asus mother board.

Just a followup to the 'power supply etc.' The desktop is home again with new motherboard, cpu, memory and power supply. PLUS microsoft accepted all of this as okay and the original SSD with win10 & software could continue in use. I don't know exactly what words were used in the communication to Microsoft but I'm sure pleased I don't have to reinstall all software and start over again.

Once you activate with "Digital license" it's stored with MS server under you MS account. I already changed 3 MBs since first W10 and all activated automatically. You can go there and delete old MB.

I had the impression that changing a motherboard was regarded as a different machine and the upgraded Win10 would not apply. I was prepared to have to buy a new copy and reinstall so it was a reprieve to discover that this replacement of parts did activate.

Well, yes, retail transfers without a hitch even if it's a free upgrade from W7/8.
