China unveils world's largest amphibious aircraft

  • Floatplane - Weight is predominantly suspended above floats.
  • Flying Boat - The fuselage is mostly in the water.
• Amphibious - Meets the requirements for seaplanes and is also capable of terrestrial landing. There are amphibious float planes (wheels deploy out of the floats) and amphibious flying boats (like this Chinese aircraft).

Darpa has announced the latest winner of its vertical take-off and landing experimental aircraft project called VTOL X-plane.






The concept was dreamed up by engineers from Virginia and its ability to take off without needing a runway has been shown off in a new concept video.
Virginia-based Aurora Flight Sciences will build a prototype of its unmanned, hybrid-propulsion 'LightningStrike' aircraft after beating two competitors for the coveted Darpa projecthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b_YQgfa7OA






Darpa awarded Aurora $89.4 million (£62.9 million) to proceed to the next phase of the project, which will end up in flight tests starting around 2018.
This design combines fixed-wing technology from planes with rotary-wing technology from helicopters.
The design is an unmanned aircraft with two large rear wings and two smaller front canards, short wings mounted near the nose of the aircraft.
A turboshaft engine mounted in the fuselage would provide 3 megawatts (4,000 horsepower) of power, the equivalent of an average commercial wind turbine.
The engine would drive 24 ducted fans, nine integrated into each wing and three inside each canard.
Both the wings and the canards would rotate to direct thrust for either rearward for forward flight, downward for hovering and at angles during transition between the two.

I don't get it.
It seems they combine a drone with Harrier style tech and get massive funding.
Is the Turbo shaft engine directly driving all the smaller props or is it basically a generator to power them?
For commercial passenger usage I would have thought something along the lines of Space x vertical take off and landing could be implemented with a variable sweep wing to sustain flight.
