    Preventing Windows Defender Updates Whilst Playing a Game


    I have been having an issue lately where every game on my computer is crashing after about an hour sometimes less of the program starting and it seems to be caused by Windows Defender doing something in the background I suspect its a virus database update. What I am wondering is is there a way to prevent Windows Defender doing updates whilst a select program is running? I have checked windows defender and my general security settings and haven't found any option to do this.

    Prevent windows defender from scanning during games

    I get exactly the same problem as Zsigma:

    • Windows 10 Pro x64
    • WIndows Defender process MsMpEng.exe will unpredictably take up to 50% of CPU.
    • If this happens whilst I am playing games, then the game will lag badly.
    • Windows Defender is not running a schedule scan.
    • Procmon shows Defender is accessing lots of my documents etc files.
    • Turning off real-time protection whilst gaming is a workaround, but it is not ideal.
    • What I really what is for Defender to detect that my PC is not idle and therefore to stop hogging the CPU.

    Prevent windows defender from scanning during games

    I have decided to give windows defender a try, and I am happy with it except for the fact that it runs scans at unpredictable times. While not a problem when I am working, if I am playing a video game, it makes the game lag considerably, and with no way
    to pause the scan that I know of, this is an annoying issue.

    I write to ask:

    Can you prevent windows defender from scanning while certain applications are running (that way I could prevent it from scanning during my games)?

    If that isn't possible, can you control what time windows defender scans?

    Keys not working and screen going off whilst playing games

    Ok sorry for the late reply but I've tried the steps you provided for my keyboard but none of that worked.

    And for when my computer turns off, it went off whilst I was just using google earth as well as games. I can play some games without the laptop going off, but it is very limited and I cant have other windows open.

    I'm going to try update my laptop now, ill reply with what happens
