    We are using Win10 IoT Enterprises 2019 LTSC 1809.

    With January 2020 patches applied to my base image, I can read basically any USB flash drive previously seen OR newly inserted for the first time.

    Upon updating to the October 2020 cumulative update, many of the USB device drivers were updated. Now, when previously seen USB flash drives are inserted, they are recognized and can be used. However, if a previously unseen USB flash drive is inserted, Device Manager reports the device in the "Other devices" component group with an attention icon. Opening up properties page indicates "This device is not configured correctly. Code 1". The problem status on the Details page indicates "The device is pending further configuration. C0000495".

    The Registry reports the following:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36fc9e60-c465-11cf-8056-444553540000}\0014]
    "DriverDesc"="Unknown USB Device Device Descriptor Request Failed"
    "ProviderName"="Microsoft"
    "DriverDateData"=hex:00,80,8c,a3,c5,94,c6,01
    "DriverDate"="6-21-2006"
    "DriverVersion"="10.0.17763.1554"
    "InfPath"="usb.inf"
    "InfSection"="BADDEVICE.Dev.NT"
    "MatchingDeviceId"="USB\\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE"

    Applying the December 2020 cumulative update didn't resolve the issue either.

    I've tried all of the recommended hints related to power settings, but so far nothing has helped. I'm applying these updates to products in the field, so whatever fix we come up with, I'll need to find a way to apply it using a script.

    Any help would be most appreciated as I've been working on this for a week with no success thus far!

    :)

  2. USB-IF to Develop Media Agnostic USB Specification

    The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) today announced the development of the Media Agnostic (MA) USB specification. The specification is designed to allow wireless devices and docking stations to communicate over the USB protocol, without the need for a physical USB connection. An important design goal of the specification is to achieve wireless gigabit transfer rates while leveraging existing USB infrastructure, present in the form of:

    • Open application programming interfaces in every major operating system
    • USB class specifications by USB-IF device working groups
    • A wealth of open-source/OS specific drivers for USB classes
    • Vendor-specific device drivers for a multitude of USB vendor-specific devices

    The WiGig Serial Extension (WSE) v1.2 specification from the Wi-Fi Alliance will provide the initial foundation for the Media Agnostic USB specification. The WSE specification has been formally transferred to the USB-IF from the Wi-Fi Alliance, and the WSE specification already incorporates the USB protocol.

    "We are pleased to see the USB-IF use the WiGig Serial Extension in its development of the Media Agnostic USB specification," said Edgar Figueroa, president and CEO of Wi-Fi Alliance. "Advanced wireless usages of serial bus technology have the potential to deliver great benefit to users."

    Wireless devices implementing the Media Agnostic USB specification will be compliant with SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0) and Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0). The USB-IF has established a Media Agnostic USB Work Group which is currently developing the MA USB specification 1.0.

    Why can't I remove write protection from Dell USB recovery media?

    I have tried all the methods listed almost everywhere online to try and remove write protection from this dell usb recovery media and none worked. I called dell but they said it can't be removed. Is there a way to do it?

    The recovery media contains windows 7 home premium.

    Desktop lists removable media

    In File Explorer, removable media such as card readers, USB drives, etc. are listed under the DESKTOP hierarchy. They were not in prior Windows versions.

    Do others see this? Can they be hidden under that Desktop branch, as the dupe listings are confusing.
