Windows 10: Print queue icon opens System 32 Folder

HP envy x320 running windows 11 HomeOver last month, whenever I send anything to prrint and double click the print queue icon it opens Systwm 32 folder instead of print queue.I can access print queue if I go through printers and scanners under devices.No outstanding updates etc and no new devices installed.Any help fixing this would be great Thanks in advance

Make the "printer" tray icon open the printing queue

The behaviour of Windows has changed somewhere around 2020-2022 in regards to the printer's tray icon.

When a user is printing a document, a printer-shaped icon appears temporarily in the icons tray (bottom-right corner of the screen, near the clock). The icon stays for a short while and disappears when the job is finished.

Old behaviour :

- Before, a double-click on this icon used to open the printing queue of the printer

New behaviour :

- Again, I'm not sure at which point in tine it changed, but

- Now, when you click or double-click on the icon it does nothing.

- However, right-clicking on the icon opens a contextual menu that lets you go to "Printer and Devices"

- Then you have to locate your printer in the list

- then you have to right-click on it and select "Show what the printer is doing" to display the good old printing queue.

That's 4 clicks instead of one. That's incredibly unhandy.

Is there a workaround to get closer to the older behaviour?

It is not the exact same question though. That user was wondering why the printer icon is no longer displayed permanently, whereas I'm wondering why I can no longer open the printing queue easily.

 

Automatically show print queue?

Hi Brink,

Thanks for the suggestion as I am already using the notification area icon to bring up the queue. I also saw the other thread about making a shortcut for the queue and may give that try.

But I would still like to have the queue popup automatically when a print job is started. So if there are any other suggestions I would welcome them!

can't delete print queue in Windows 10

I am trying to follow the below advice:

This will often fix the problem on its own.

• • Open the Services window (Windows key + R, type services.msc, press enter).
  • Select Print Spooler and click the Stop icon, if it is not stopped already.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS and open this file. You may need to show hidden files or enter an administrator's password.

Delete all contents inside the folder. Do not delete the PRINTERS folder itself. Note that this will remove all current print jobs, so make sure no one on your network is using the printer.

At this point, all files are deleted EXCEPT for the one showing up in the queue - the error message is:

"This action can't be completed because the file is open in printfilterpipelinesvc.exe"

The file HAS printed, but the queue is still showing it in the printing state.

Very frustrating ....
