Windows 10: Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Due To Hidden Background Process

Hi everyone,

I recently got a new external hard drive and I transferred some of my documents onto it. The device removal policy is set to better performance to speed up file transfer and it has Bitlocker enabled. It was fine the first day but seems like as more files pile up, its getting harder to eject the hard drive using the safely remove hardware option. So to safely remove it I have to either shut the PC down or put it to sleep before I unplug it. Since its getting incredibly annoying, I decided to use resource monitor to see what are the processes that prevented the removal. From what I see, following files are being read and written after I pressed eject mass storage:


\$LogFile NTFS Volume Log

\$Mft NTFS Master File Table

\System Volume Information

\System Volume Information\tracking.log

\System Volume Information\FVE2.{..........

\$Extend

\$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog


They just don't seem to be stopping at all. Is it due to the removal policy or Bitlocker? What are those files and how can I stop them all to remove my drive without shutting down?

Three USB devices were used to transfer files from one computer to another.

Each was an open of file explorer then copy and paste into one drive.

One drive and file explorer were each closed.

How come the Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device displayed this device is currently in use?

What needs to be closed so that a reboot is not required?
