  1. Problem with accessing network shares on Win10 pc from Win10 laptop

So I'm having a problem that appeared fairly recently (about a week ago).
I have shared some directories on my PC that I use as a file server, and I have mounted those as network drives on my laptop.
This allows me to play my entire Steam library from the server, which has quite a bit of storage space.

Suddenly, I can't connect to my server anymore via the network.
I reset the network adapters via Windows Settings on both my server and laptop, temporarily disabled the firewall on both and tried solutions provided online. No dice.

When I try to open my network drive, I get the following message: "An error occurred while reconnecting X: to \\Powerhouse\Media. Microsoft Windows Network: the network path was not found."
Powerhouse is the Windows name of my server.

If I try to access my server directly as "\\powerhouse", I get the option to diagnose the problem.
The result of that is: "file and printer sharing resource (powerhouse) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts."

If I look under network, I don't see my server showing up, which it did before.
Network discovery is, of course, turned on on both machines.

Now I have read other forum posts about this issue, of course, but I haven't seen one person for whom a suggested solution for the problem actually worked.
    That's why I'm asking here.

I really hope someone has an idea about what the problem is here.

    :)

Win10 local area network sharing doesn't work

There is an awful lot of clutter on this subject which frankly baffles me.

    I have a home network:

    Netgear WNDR4500 Router

7PCs; 6 of them wired; 2 are Win10, 2 are Win7, one is Vista and one is XP (!)

My PC was Win 7 and then I could access the Shared Documents (etc) on all the other PCs. Nice and easy.

Then my PC and another were upgraded to Win10.

Before upgrading I clicked on > Network in File Explorer and all the other PCs were listed.

Immediately after upgrading that still worked.

Then it became intermittent; sometimes worked, sometimes only showed some of the PCs.

Now after a week it only shows this PC on the network.

Furthermore; Homegroup has never worked after upgrading. Although this PC set up the Homegroup; now when I click , it just invites me to join the Homegroup. I put in the password and it fails with "Windows no longer detects a homegroup...." .

I have (as suggested here) changing the Windows sign in from my Microsoft account to a local account; but that made no difference.

I have checked the 'Change advanced sharing settings' - Network Discovery is on, File and Printer sharing is on, Password Protected Sharing is off, all as suggested.

What do I do now to restore access to my local network as it was before?

While I was typing this; the Vista PC appeared in > Network, but when I select it I get "Windows cannot access \\mmmm" The trouble shooter says to 'contact my network administrator'!

installing network printer on an Xp to use shared printer on win10

If you had problems with "credentials" trying to install a network printer on an Xp this solution will work, Does not involve credentials.

    George

If you have problems trying to install a network printer on an Xp computer to the shared printer on Win10:

(the win10 is plugged directly into the computer!)

    try this

    Firstly

On the win10 computer indicate the share name then in the securities window list all the users that will be using this printer. These will be user codes and will verified by win10.

If you do not know the name of the win10 machine then do this now.

    Summary:

    Computer name

    Printer share name

    List of permitted users.

Secondly sign on to the xp computer with a user name that is mentioned in the securities list above.

    Then proceed as follows:

    1) click start then click printers and faxes

    2) click add printer ( in left pane)

    3) click next

    4) select LOCAL printer attached to this computer: click next

    5) Select create a new PORT. Select “local port” for the port type and click next.

    6) System asks for port name: enter path and share name for example \\win10computername\printersharename
this is similar to mapping a network drive, instead of server, folder it is server printer share name.

    7) Select printer brand and model number (for the driver)

    8) Follow the rest of the wizard.

    9) Do not share printer. Win10 will manage it

    10) Print test page, print a simple document.
