    Problem with default internet browser after messing with registry internet settings


    A couple of weeks ago I was trying to install a program on my Windows 11 machine, but it kept saying "your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened". I searched the internet for a solution and started trying every one of them. One of the solutions was to delete the Internet Settings folder from registry from this path : HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Internet Settings, then create a new user, go to the Internet Settings registry folder in that user, export it, and then install it in the main user.     As you want to set Internet Explorer as the default browser, I suggest you to follow the steps below:

    • Navigate to Start>Settings>System.
    • In the left pane, click on Default Apps.
    • In the right pane, under Web browser, click on Microsoft edge and select
      Internet Explorer.
    • Restart the system and check.

    • Does this issue happens while you try to set other browser as default too or is it specific to specific browser?


    To set Internet Explorer/Edge as a default browser, I suggest you to follow the below given steps:



    • Press Windows key and type Default Program in search and hit enter.
    • Select "Set your default programs"
    • Click on “Internet Explorer" or “Edge”.
    • Select "Set this program as default” and Click OK.

    Internet Explorer as default browser

    Hi BoomerPerkins.

    to change the default browser go to settings -> apps -> default apps

    under web browser, click on the current default (Microsoft Edge)

    then select internet explorer from the list
