Windows 10: Problem with disk management and vhd

I have a system image backup file vhdx, when i create a virtual drive it shows as disk 2 basic. Unallocated with a black bar and doesn't show in volumes. I made the backup in Windows 8.1 and trying to get individual files onto my new Windows 10. I've tried many times with the same results and yes the box to read only is not checked.

i dont know how to fix your disk management, but i can fix your partition problems...




open up Command Prompt with admin rights. (Right click, run as admin)


enter in
DISKPART
list disk

then find the Disk number for your Raid array... lets call it number 7 ( you can tell what disk is what by the total size)
type in

Select Disk 7
List Partition (will give you a list of all the partitions..)
Select Partition 1 (im assuming you only have 1 partition on Disk 7) repeat this step if you have more partitions.
ASSIGN


that should get the array up and running ready to use.

how do i make vhd files without disk management?

so I was trying to make a VHD file but the "create VHD" button in disk management was greyed out. How do I create a virtual hard disk?

I started with thinking a VHD and dual booting would be the way to go, but ended up installing in a VM - native Windows Hyper-V

I wish I had taken the time to search for those links before starting - but what fun would that have been?

Your machine has to be capable of Virtualization and it has to be enabled
- check your specs or your BIOS (InsydeH2O bios on my HP referred to it as SVM)

Hyper-V has to be turned on in Windows (turn Windows features on/off - Pgm & Feat)

The only real difficulty I had was getting my WLAN to work in the VM.
