Windows 10: Problem with regsvr32 on Windows 10 (64bit version)

Hello,

I have a problem with regsvr32 on my Windows 10, 64bit version. I got an error that claims "Component 'MSCOMM32.OCX' or one of its dependencies is not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid". I looked for some help on the Internet, downloded the file 'MSCOMM32.OCX' and placed it in System32 folder and SysWOW64 folder. Then I ran cmd as an administrator, where I typed following commands:


C:\WINDOWS\system32>cd\windows\syswow64

regsvr32 /u MSCOMM32.OCX

regsvr32 /i MSCOMM32.OCX



After the last command, I get an error, that the module C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\MSCOMM32.OCX was loaded, but the entry point DllInstall was not found and I should make sure whether the file is a correct DLL or OCX file.


I'm a totally newbie in this field, any ideas how could I solve this problem?

Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

Regsvr32 is a command-line utility to register and unregister OLE controls, such as DLLs and ActiveX controls in the Windows Registry. Regsvr32.exe is installed in the %systemroot%\System32 folder in Windows XP and later versions of Windows.

Note On a 64-bit version of Windows operating system, there are two versions of the Regsv32.exe file:

• The 64-bit version is %systemroot%\System32\regsvr32.exe.
• The 32-bit version is %systemroot%\SysWoW64\regsvr32.exe.

Try one of the following methods when you receive a Regsvr32 error:

Method 1: Re-run the Regsvr32 command from an elevated command prompt

• To open an elevated command prompt, following these steps:

Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click
Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
Allow..

• Method 2: Use the 32-bit version of Regsvr32 to register a 32-bit DLL on a 64-bit version of Windows If you receive an error when registering a 32-bit DLL on a 64-bit version of Windows, follow these steps:
  • Open an elevated command prompt.
  • If the 32-bit DLL is in the %systemroot%\System32 folder, move it to the %systemroot%\SysWoW64 folder.

Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Windows Explorer crashes and thumbnails problem

Hi, I hope you can help me.
Windows Explorer is no longer showing thumbnails on files played by Windows Media Player. I've run cmd and regsvr32 shmedia.dll and regsvr32 shimgvw.dll. That seemed to solve the problem...but it created a different one. Now when I try to open a folder on an external hard drive it crashes. I read in an old 2008 post it was an avi file causing the problem and suggested the run cmd regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll. That solved the opening problem but recreated the thumbnail problem. Any help to achieve both functions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
