  1. Problem with Resetting Associated App for Adobe xmp file

I wanted to reset the App association I changed in error.I have tried the method suggested by DaveM121, however thid didn't work for me as I didn't get the "choose open with - Choose another App" option.I'm not sure why this didn't happen .... I'm using Windows 10 Pro on a Dell Vostro 15 7510.Can anyone understand why I was not offered that option/provide any solution.

How do I DISassociate a file type in Windows 10?

I inadvertently associated a .lst file to open using my Adobe reader. I have followed all the steps you suggested and deleted everything listed. It still shows that Adobe is the default app to use with the file. Any other suggestions?

Can't associate .ai file to Illustrator or .psd file to photoshop

I have tried everything to associate the .ai file to illustrator. All my .ai files are associated with Acrobat

    • rt click - open with - choose another app - more apps - look for another app on the pc
      • I navigate to Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CC 2018/Support Files/Contents/Windows and then select Illustrator.exe file
      • Error Message: This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page.
    • I go to the Default Apps setting page and click on Apps & Features (both Illustrator CC 2018 and Photoshop CC 2018 are listed there)
      • No options here, but to uninstall so I go back to Default Apps
    • I select Choose default apps by file type
      • I scroll down to .ai (which should be an Illustrator file) and it has associated it with Adobe Acrobat

    • When I click on the Adobe Acrobat icon it only gave me two options -- Acrobat and to look for an App in the Store
    • I contacted Adobe Support and they told me this is a Windows OS problem.
This is incredibly frustrating. While I know I can open the file using the program the file itself will not import properly into other CC programs.

Adobe is being reset to Chrome every time I restart my laptop

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue where Chrome takes over as the default PDF viewer on your Windows 11 laptop after every restart, despite setting Adobe Acrobat (or Reader) as the default PDF application. Here are steps to resolve this problem:

    1. Set Default by Right-Clicking a PDF File:
      • Right-click on any PDF file.
      • Select "Open with" > "Choose another app".
      • Select Adobe Acrobat (or Reader) from the list and check the box that says "Always use this app to open .pdf files".
      • Click "OK".
    2. Set Default via Settings:
      • Open Settings, You can do this quickly by pressing Windows + I.
      • Go to Apps > Default Apps.
      • Scroll down and find the file type .pdf.
      • Click on the current default app (Chrome in your case) and select Adobe Acrobat (or Reader) as the new default.
    3. Use Adobe's Default PDF Handler Tool:
      • Open Adobe Acrobat (or Reader).
      • Go to Edit > Preferences.
      • In the Categories pane, select General.
      • Click on the Select As Default PDF Handler button and follow the prompts.
    4. Repair Adobe Installation:
      • Open Adobe Acrobat (or Reader).
      • Go to Help > Repair Installation.
      • Follow the prompts and restart your computer.
    5. Create a New User Profile:
      • If the issue persists, it could be due to a corrupted user profile. Try creating a new user account on your Windows 11 and setting it up there.
    6. Reset System File Associations:
      • Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the command

        Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:"%UserProfile%\Desktop\DefaultAppAssociations.xml"

This exports your current file association settings.
      • Open the DefaultAppAssociations.xml file on your desktop with Notepad, find the .pdf association, and manually change it to your Adobe application (the exact process can be complex and requires some technical knowledge).
If none of these steps work, there might be deeper issues with your Windows installation, and you may need to consult with a professional or consider a system reset. Remember to back up all important data before taking drastic measures.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.

    Best regards
