Windows 10: Problems deleting a folder 'Could not find this item' error

Hi, first time asking a question on here but I've spent hours googling and I'm stumped.


I have two folders in a drive I am trying to delete cleaning up folder/subfolders.


I can't rename them, and I can't delete them. Every time I try, I get a 'Item not found, Could not find this item" error.


The directory is 3 folders deep.

I have the main folder, which can be renamed. The second folder, which can be renamed, and that second folder contains two folders which are the source of my problems. Neither can be deleted or renamed.

However, I can zip the folders, I can put things in them, but anything I put into it is no longer openable word docs, excel docs, etc..


I tried several 'unlocker' style programs, which were unable to delete or rename the folders.

I tried bitdefender's file shredder, which tells me the file is not found.

I tried CMD prompt, which tells me 'the system cannot find the file specified.'

I seem to basically be out of solutions at this point. I have no idea what to do now.


To be clear, this isn't actually harming anything... it just means i'll have a directory of 3 subfolders that I can't delete which is pretty annoying.

Thanks for the suggestion but it says "delete folder failed for E:\....." for each folder I try.

Hey mate (yes im from australia)

I had this problem just before and fixed it pretty easily.
Have to use the good old command prompt and delete from there.
Windows is just gettin shitter and shitter isnt it. might go back to DOS soon lol

Steps> CMD in run > go to the folder (start menu folder) > type: DEL (watever the filename is) and if it says from filename put in the shortname eg. 034Michael short would maybe be 034Mich~l or sumthing like that.

Vista - Weird error trying to delete Start Menu item

I'm trying to delete an unneeded folder from the Start Menu. I right-click and then "Explore", navigate to "Programs", select the folder and press delete.

It won't let me delete the folder! (It is an empty folder.) The error that comes up is:

The thing is, the folder IS there. I'm sitting here looking at it. Why is Windows telling me it doesn't exist, and more importantly, how can I finally delete this useless empty folder which is cluttering up my Start Menu?
