Windows 10: Problems installing Malwarebytes v2.2.0.1024 latest for Win 10

Hello.

Windows Defender did something nasty to my machine and now I cannot access the Internet through any browser although my system shows I have connection. Just get the nutty "This webpage is not available" with "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN". Seems it must have deleted something I need.

So after a big hassle trying to shut down Defender and keep it off (as it kept coming back on again and with constant malware warnings endlessly), I decided to run my Malwarebytes that was already installed previously.

However, Malwarebytes came up with an error about not finding something called dnsapi.dll and to reinstall.

No matter how many times I try to reinstall, including doing so after using the Malwarebytes clean tool first, it comes up with an error during installation:

Runtime Error (at 97:137):
Could not call proc.

And installation fails and ends.

Any ideas?

ELARA App preventing shutdown

I run Malwarebytes frequently and it showed no infections right up until the WIN 10 installation. That went pretty badly and now I have this infection.

Running Malwarebytes post-WIN 10 has revealed 2 infections. I can't help feeling that the two go hand in hand..... Elara and cocked up **** WIN 10 install.

I also have Malwarebytes but had no problem downloading win 7 games to win 10 using the winaero web site

 

Apparently Win Defender considered dnsapi.dll to be a virus. It was deleted from SysWow64 but not from System32 folder.

I decided to install MalwareBytes on another Win 10 PC and then copied the dnsapi.dll from it to my broken machine.

MalwareBytes proceeded to install correctly and my internet access has also been restored.

Actually the problem you describe sounds very much like a common malware problem reported often at the malware removal section of the Malwarebytes forum.

While it does appear that you happened upon at least a partial solution (replacing the patched dll with a clean copy), you might want to head over there for a free, expert look at the system, to be sure there is no other malware lurking on the system.

To do so, we suggest starting with the advice in this pinned topic: Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers
Then, please post the requested diagnostic logs in a new, separate post in the Malware Removal forum.
A trained malware helper will walk you through scanning, cleanup and repair, as needed.
