  3. Problems with Media Creation Tool.

I've tried that several times, but after a few seconds all it says is the very descriptive, "Something happened".

Are you using a 3rd party anti virus or firewall?

You can download the Windows 10 ISO file directly from MS here, without having to run the Media Creation Tool to get it:

At what stage of running MCT do you get this error? Did you get as far as this screen?

If so, did you then use the 'Upgrade this PC now' option?

I prefer to create the install media and use that to do the repair install, the 'upgrade now' option has to download the full install package each time you use it. You could get the .iso directly as suggested. However, using MCT to make the media does have the advantage that by default it will create the recommended version for this PC, plus you can create a bootable USB (my preferred media) rather than the .iso.

Having made the media once (by MCT or direct download) it can be used many times (useful if your error doesn't occur until the 'installing' stage). I recently did a repair install with the media I originally got MCT to make for my upgrade to 1607.

  9. Are you using an old version you downloaded previously, or did you download the latest version? Either way, I would download it again and start over from scratch, if you haven't already done that.

Thanks all...wondering about another option to get my PC running smoothly again...can I still upgrade to current Win 10 Pro 64 bit iso from Win 7 Pro 64 bit for free ?

I still have the image (Acronis) of my old good running Win 7 Pro system in my systems backup external USB drive. This is the system I used to upgrade for free to Win 10. Is it still possible to reinstall the 7 image and then upgrade/update again for free to the current Win 10 Pro 64 bit image/system ?

Would this make sense...have spent hours in lasts weeks trying to recover from Win 10 Anniversary update issues and get back a functioning/non-error Win 10 system without much luck ?

( p.s. using latest Win 10 iso - I assume with Anniversary Update already installed )

    Thanks...TiminAz

I would just do a clean install of Windows 10. But, yes, then you will have to re-install all your programs and apps and restore any data files you back up first.

    Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

You can export any manufacturer's specific drivers before the clean install by opening a Command Prompt (Admin) and running:

    Dism /online /export-driver /destinationProblems with Media Creation Tool :D:\Drivers

The path in red will be to an external storage device to hold the exported drivers.

A clean install would be the... well... 'cleanest' way to get a functioning Windows 10 system. But yes, you could restore your old Win7 system and upgrade that.

Either way, clean install or upgrade, your Windows 10 will activate. When you took the free upgrade to Windows 10 a digital licence tied to the hardware of your PC was recorded on Microsoft's activation servers. If asked for a key during the install/upgrade just click the 'I don't have one' link near the bottom of that screen. Activation will happen automatically as soon as Windows contacts the activation servers.

OK guys...thanks to all who have helped me...don't mind the hazzle of clean install...have multiple backups of files and data, etc....and program installation files.

Main concern is my system was running fine prior to Anniversary Update recently....would I encounter the same issue after a clean install.....?

Probably not. Many people have done clean installs after problems developed with the numerous updates and their problems were resolved, even after updating to the most recent build.

Then would Brink's tutorial "How to Directly Clean Install Windows 10 without having to Upgrade First" (How to Directly Clean Install Windows 10 without having to Upgrade First
Published by Brink 20 Sep 2015) be the way to go...I could then install my programs and copy/or transfer the user files of same to the appropriate coresponding directories....??

    Agreed ??
