    Process "system" (ntoskrnl.exe) is taking up 20% while idle.


    After my laptop sits 10min idle the process "system (pid4)", specifically by thread called ntoskml.exe!SeAccessCheckWithHirt+0x1c620 causes "high" CPU usage, usually around 13-20%. If any key is pressed or the mouse moved, this stops immediately.

    I first noticed it about 1-2 weeks ago when my laptop wouldn't shut off whenever I fell asleep. This is why I suspect the thread won't stop after a certain time. I never had this issue before this, so something must've changed.

    Windows updated a few times in this timeframe. No new drivers were installed. I already scanned with hitman pro, adwcleaner and malwarebytes, no viruses found.

    System idle process spike

    Although you may have a problem that is causing fps drops, "System Idle Process" isn't what's causing it.

    When "CPU usage" for System Idle Process is high, that means that your CPU is not doing much useful work.

    Idle, noun:

    • not working or active; unemployed; doing nothing: idle workers.
    • not spent or filled with activity: idle hours.
    When System Idle Process shows as 30%, what's taking up the majority of the rest of the CPU cycles? That's probably the source of the problem.

    System Idle Process CPU Allocation?

    Hi,

    System Idle Process, as the name suggests is a process that indicates CPU is idle and is not being used, aka is at rest. This is done to totalize CPU usage to 100 between the processes.

    So you do not have to worry about anything.
