    Processes Becoming Suspended

For some reason starting about a week ago certain processes occasionally become suspended on my laptop. I'm running Windows 10x64 Pro on a Sager laptop with 16 GB of RAM and then i7 processor. The processor becomes suspended varies but IE 11 is one of the ones that become suspended and when it does obviously cause all kinds of problems. I'm attaching a screen capture showing 4 processes that were just suspended when I checked. Any idea how this is happening and how to prevent it?

    :)

    Windows 10 processes becoming suspended

I ran the safety scanner and it didn't find anything in the quick mode. I ran it in the complete mode and it just screwed up a couple of my data files for AutoCAD but didn't find anything other than that. The problem is still occurring, any more ideas
    of things I can try?

I ran the troubleshooter and I didn't find any problems. I then did the clean start and have already had a couple of incidences where it suspended IE 11 while I was using it! When I checked member usage with its 39% an CPU usage was 5%. I'm also posting
a screen clip below from Process Explorer but I just took another time when IE crashed. As you can see I'm not using many resources.

What sort of problems does this cause?

The ability to suspend programs particular the new style apps is a design feature of W8 and W10 and is to ensure that they do not consume memory and CPU time when they are idle. If you open resource monitor and look at the CPU tab all the suspended apps are shown in blue at the top.

The only process that I know cause the problem to become suspended is IE 11. When it becomes suspended I cannot minimize it nor opened another window on top of it. It happens sometimes while I'm using it.

It actually happened while I was writing this reply. I took a quick screenshot of the resource monitor which is attached. You can see that none of my research are becoming limited at all when this occurs.

I also can't use the resume command to un-suspend the process. I have to completely kill the process and restart IE when this happens.

Does anybody have any ideas about this? It's still happening despite a completely installation of Windows 10.

Do you have any media software installed like foobar or jrivermedia? The reason I ask, the shell integration is the problem with software like these causing any thing suspended to become locked. The only solution is to restart shellexperience host, searchui and anything that runs in the app container.

    Hello MSRandell,

Sorry it has taken a while to get back to you. I have run some tests with IE open and I do not get either of the 2 iexplore.exe processes suspending even after leaving my system idle for a while. If I close the IE window the iexplore.exe processes become terminated.

I believe as you have one suspended and it shows as having no threads you must have an app or process on your system which requires iexplorer.exe and it has failed in some way. It will be necessary to do some diagnostic investigation to track down the culprit. To do this you will need to use the Start-up tab in Task Manager to stop various programs starting until you find the one that causes it. If you like you can show a screenview of your Start-up tab and we can make some suggestions. You could also try the clean boot process as explained in the tutorial below:

Here's a screenshot of the startup page from task manager. I've basically eliminated all startup items except those that are essential. Because of my disability I need to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking or I can control the computer.

I've tried doing a Clean Boot multiple times and that has had no effect on the problem. Your help is certainly appreciated.

Are you saying you still have the problem after doing a clean boot where you disable all the services and startup programs as shown in the tutorial? If that is the case it means that none of the services that you hid in step 3 or programs stopped in steps 4 & 5 are responsible for the problem. However, your first sentence says that you did not disable all the startup items so I am confused.

  12. This is how UWP Apps work. They don't end when you close them, they suspend.

They don't use any resources (or very few) when suspended, they only start faster if you subsequently launch the same App

    This is normal behavior.

@Slartybart: I basically informed the OP of the same facts but he has responded that it is IE11 that is causing him problems. Earlier today I did some tests with IE11 that showed the OP's observations were not normal. I think there is a problem but am not sure what is triggering it. Be glad of your help.

The only program I didn't disable startup was Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I'm handicapped and I need to use it in order to do anything on my computer. I also didn't disable Norton Security. Other than that I disabled everything.

Of these two programs I would suspect Dragon NaturallySpeaking may be the culprit. I googled for any info on this and found that it is not fully compatible with IE11. There were some sites that recommended turning off Enable Enhanced Protection Mode in the Advanced tab of IE11 options.
