Windows 10: Program I want to set as default will not show up under Default Prog.

There have a whole host of this type of question registered in the past. But this one - my case - has thrown me for a loop.

I've been trying to select Firefox as my default Windows 10 browser program (I used to be able to do it) - but something has happened as a result of the last Windows update that changed everything.

Now my Default Program window (drop down list) does not show some of the programs I've chosen as Default in the past.

For example, even though the Default Pograms list for Browser does not show Firefox in the drop down window, I then went into the link below it that shows "Choose Default Apps by File Type."

While there I changed HTM and HTML to Firefox. Normally, this would result in the program then showing up under default apps - but now it doesn't. I also changed two other settings to Firefox in the "Choose Default Apps by File Type" section, but that doesn't do it either.





So what occurs now is that whenever I click on a link - let's say it's in an email - it wants to bring up the Edge browser.

Are there any other areas within Windows 10 where I can make adjustments to ensure that the program(s) I want to set as default - i.e. like in the browser section - will show up in the drop down list?

I do not find Internet Explorer 11 anywhere in Windows 10.

It's usually found here: look under Windows Accessories in your Apps Menu.

If it's not there, then: open your Run command (Windows key + R) and type iexplore.exe and Enter.

If you want to make it your default browser then go to: Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults. At Custom, change the browser (if it shows up).

 

Default Music Player

Hello,

I want to assign my keyboard's launch music player key to Spotify on win 10. For this I need to either assign the media key to the program somehow, or change the default music player.

The default music player is Groove and this is the one that starts when I press music player button. I cannot change the default program to Spotify, because it does not show up in the list when I go to default programs > music player. It suggest I search
in the store, so I downloaded store version of Spotify as well, and it still doesn't show up there.

So how do I either change the behaviour of the music launcher key, or change the default music player to a program that does not show up in the list of music players under default programs.

 

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs

 

Nope - I tried that. In my Control Panel there is nothing that says "All Control Panel Items.: There is a "Default Programs" Icon. Here is a screen shot of my Control Panel:





When you click on that you are offered several choices - but two of them bring you back to the settings/Default Programs area that I'm having trouble with - which is this one:





When I click on Programs and Features in the Control Panel - all I get is the following (nothing there to assign defaults):





So we're back at square one!!!

You can't get to where you need to be from here:





You need to paste: C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{17cd9488-1228-4b2f-88ce-4298e93e0966} -Microsoft.DefaultPrograms\pageDefaultProgram into a Run box to get here:





Then it'll show up here:

 

Benherrmann, try resetting default apps. It's under Settings / apps / Default apps and down at the bottom click on Reset. Iz should restore other options

 

Just tried resetting - nothing works. After resetting - which I've done a half dozen times now - the Firefox program still won't show in the dropdown list.

Just tried your method above - selected Firefox as the default. Yet it still won't show up under my default program list for browsers. Frustrating to be sure.

 

Which browser do show in that list? Did you try reinstalling Firefox?

 

what shows are Edge, Internet Explorer, Waterfox and Cyberfox (which are 3rd part versions of Firefox - but different), Opera, and Vivaldi. But the actual program Firefox is not there (like it used to be prior to the recent windows update). I uninstalled and installed Firefox twice now.

 

Just let Firefox handle it.

Type aboutreferences in firefox address bar then press enter.

 

And you've tried all three extra options at the bottom of settings page: set default by file type, by protocol (this should work) and set default by app - if you can find FF here this should also work. Problem is, that MS removed these from Control panel and put them in settings.
@Callender: this will just direct you to the settings..

 

Yes - that's the first thing I tried. Still no luck. Firefox won't show. So what I reluctant did was to choose another browser (Waterfox - which is a Firefox variant). So now I have Waterfox as the default program. But would still prefer Firefox. Oh well, must be my PC. But all of this occurred with the last update that occurred last week.

 

Uninstall ver 57, and install 58. It's on RC3 stage and should be stable. Install 64bit. Also you could install version other than previous, if 58 wont work (if you have 32 bit, install 64 and vice versa..
