Program runs in background but not launching. Used to work a week ago.

    Hi all
Recently upgraded from windows 8 to 10 fresh install ( 2 months ago)

    My problem:
A program "Ulead Gif Animator" that used to work fine a week ago is suddenly not working anymore. I can see the process is running in background with Task manager but not launching on screen.

    Tried:
    Reinstalling program.
    Clean and safe boot.
Ran AV scan/ Malwarebyte / chkdsk and sfc scans. ( All clean/ no errors)
Removed all the program roots from Regedit and folders.

Those same programs I use since XP to 7. And working perfectly on 8 and 10.
Had this issue followed me from 8 where my " Cool Pro Audio editor" that worked yesterday not working on the next day, exactly same issue above.
Now with Windows 10, it's the same issue with different program.

My concern is, that issue will occur with more than one program in the future.
And I have no idea what causing this.

The only thing that changed on my system was uninstalling AVG and installing Avast a month ago.

    Any solution?

    :)

can not sync htc xv6900 did work a week ago now it does not now can't find device

    Linley:

Yes...I hear a sound event when the phone is plugged into the USB port, the sound I normally hear as the phone and computer begin communicating. Activesync indicates a connection is in progress (the 2-arrow logo rotates and activesync on my computer says "Connecting").
After a period of time a pop-up message says "ActiveSync cannot connect to the Windows Mobile powered device. To troubleshoot the problem, click OK."

The troubleshooter doesn't find a problem and asks to send a report to MS, which I have done.

In another thread someone suggested plugging in the phone, finding and deleting the device driver, rebooting and plugging in the phone to reinstall the drivers. This solution did not work for me.

Finally, I plugged my phone into a laptop and was able to get all the appropriate activesync behavior (i.e. I was asked to set up a partnership). So, the phone and cable are probably fine and the problem seems to lie with my desktop pc.

The phone is currently a large paperweight w/o being able to sync to outlook so I am wide open to suggestions! Thank you for your help.

    Best,

    Alan

    Welcome to the TenForums @black

Could I suggest you re-install in compatibility mode.

I would also suggest that after installing you completely shutdown Windows by holding shift key down and clicking shutdown. This bypasses Windows 10 Fast Start up and you get a fresh start of Windows.

If your software was developed and last maintained for XP this will happen more and more. Windows and all OS are evolving for functionality and security reasons. Really old software very well will run but the vendor will be the first to say it is not supported, meaning we won't fix.

Hopefully compatibility install will give it new life.

You could also try a system restore to say a week ago. You have a handle on what you installed, could you check Windows update history and see what Windows has installed. You can influence Windows software updates and you can stop driver updates.

    Thank you.
Yes sorry, forgot to mention, Windows update is disabled by services since day 2 after installing windows.
Also tried running the program with all compatibilities, tried your way to installing it with compatibility and shutdown with fresh start. Still not working.

That's what driving me nuts, if the program never run since installing windows I'd say it's not compatible with it,but I have been using it for almost 2 months, functioning perfectly and the outputs are prefect never had any error.

I checked my System restore, it created Auto point on Jan 17, looking at affected programs:
    Nvidia Graphic card update.
    that's it.
I don't want to use restore point, that's seems a temporarily fix till it happen again *Sad

Also try uninstalling then reinstalling the program in addition to the above.

  7. I might not be following. If you do a restore and get your program working again then shut off Windows updating your drivers. My opinion, it is not required and causes more issues than it solves. When you machine gets into issues then update drivers, the ones needed.

    Two ways to handle

    Windows + R keys
    Enter Sysdm.cpl
    Click on Hardware tab
    Click on Device Installation Settings
    Click on No
A menu appears (first time) click Never Install driver software.
You may get a warning. Click the option that says I’ll take care of it (not exact words)

Program runs in background but not launching. Used to work a week ago.

    Already tried that several times.
Repair, and remove from program setup itself. Still not working.

The restore point is on Jan 17 and the program was working fine a week ago.
Auto drivers update is already disabled along with windows update, as you said it causing more troubles than help, the Nvidia driver update was done by me manually.

Thank you guys. Any more suggestions?

Did you try the common fix of scanning/repairing your system files running sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt?
