What the title says - certain programs on my computer can't open files.

When I go to Paint and click File > Open, a separate window opens so I can choose a file, as I should be able to.

But when I open an application like Discord and try to upload a file using the "+" button in the message bar, or try to change a playlist's image on Spotify, this separate window to choose a file doesn't show up. I click the button the "+" button in Discord or the "replace image" button in Spotify, the loading cursor appears for a split second, and then nothing happens.

This used to work. I use Discord to share photos, music files etc and change my Spotify playlist covers all the time.

This issue just popped up today, along with some Bad Image errors 0xc000012f at the first time I tried to open the apps. I ran sfc/scannow, RestoreHealth, DISM.exe etc in admin Command Prompt and those allowed me to open the programs and they seemed to function normally until THIS problem happened.

I did recently delete temp files and files that my computer explicitly said are "safe to delete" using the native "save disk space" feature in Settings + Disk Cleanup.

Can someone please help??? Thank you so much!!!<3

    :)

  2. W7 One click, then choose program?

I used to be able to do it before formatting. Double click on a file of a certain type would bring up the compatible programs (choose compatible program menu), I didn't have a default set. Now it just goes to the default program, and I've tried unchecking "always use this program," but I can't seem to get it.
Basically I want double click to open up the "Set default program" menu for certain file types rather than just opening with the default.

Nothing happens when opening specific program

Do you have any other video-related software installed? If so, can you run it or do you get the same error message?

That's an odd error message and I don't have personal experience with it. I've seen a few suggested fixes, but I can't guarantee that they will work.

    1. I have particularly little expectation that this will fix things, but it's good place to start.

    • Open an Elevated Command Prompt (click Start, type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-click on the shortcut to Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator," respond to the UAC prompt)
    • Type the following line into the black Command Prompt window and press Enter

      sfc /scannow
    • In your Reply, indicate which of the following you got when the process completes
      • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
      • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
      • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log
        %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.
      • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log
        %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

    2. Assuming that either no problems were found or that any problems that were found were fixed, go here and check to see if there is an update for your video driver, and if there is, download and install it:
    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

    3. If at this point you still have the problem, you can use the "clean boot" method to try to find if there is indeed something running in the background that's causing you problems.

    STEP A

    1. Click Start and type msconfig in the search box.
    2. Press Enter.
    3. On the General tab, click Selective startup.
    4. Clear the Load startup items check box.
    5. Click the Services tab.
    6. Select the Hide all Microsoft services check box (at the bottom).
    7. Click Disable all.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Click Restart.

Confirm that the problem does not occur. In other words, do whatever it is you do that causes the problem to appear and confirm that it does not appear. If the problem
DOES appear at this point, you have something more serious going on. Skip to
    STEP D.

    STEP B

    1. Click Start and type msconfig in the search box.
    2. Press Enter.
    3. Click the Startup tab
    4. Clear half of the items. I suggest clicking "Startup Item" in the header row, which will sort the items alphabetically. This should make it easier to remember which items you've cleared.
    5. Click OK
    6. Click Restart

    STEP C

Check to see whether the problem occurs.

    • If the problem DOES occur, then you know that it is caused by one of the programs that remained checked. In this case, repeat
STEP B and this time clear half of the items that had remained checked.
    • If the problem DOES NOT occur, then you know that it is caused by one of the programs that you cleared in the last iteration. In this case, repeat
STEP B and this time re-check half of the items that you cleared in the last iteration.

Repeat STEPS B and C until you have identified the item that causes the problem

    STEP D

    To return to normal

    1. Click Start and type msconfig in the search box.
    2. Press Enter.
    3. On the General tab, select Normal startup.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Click Yes when asked to restart your computer.
