Windows 10: Programs lost after Windows Update

Last night, I upgraded my Windows 10 version 1909 to 20H2 via Windows Media creation tool. I ticked on "keep personal files and apps" option. After the update, there was a message like "here's the legal stuff" where I only allowed to select Decline or Accept. I selected accept. After Windows logged in, all of my previous installed programs went missing from Start Menu and Control Panel. However, the program files were still presented in Drive C/ program files and program files x86. So I decided to roll back Windows to previous version.


Now, I don't know how to prevent this problem from happening again. Are there any suggestions?

Why did the startup window get cleared?

I didn't missed any step, the list was gone and gone , even after using lot of programs the programs were not listed in that list.

 

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild

Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.
