Proper way to regain ownership of user folders after install

Now that I have successfully installed Windows with no sfc errors, I am wondering what is the best way to take ownership of user folders from previous install.

I have my user folders installed on another drive so when you click on them you get this:

Normally I just click continue and it allows me access, but I wonder if theres a better way to gain access perhaps with take ownership.

    :)

  2. Windows 10 and Adobe Photoshop Compatibility

There is also a compatibility issue between high resolutions monitors, Windows 10 and Photoshop software. I have CS5.

I also upgraded from win 7 to win 10 and lost ownership of all my files and folders, which has taken me 2 weeks to regain this ownership.

  3. Losing permissions to Documents folder after reboot

    Hello Malik,

    I appreciate the response.

As for the methods you list:

    Method 1: Turn off UAC.

I do not understand why turning off this feature would help, could you explain? I would not want to run indefinitely with this disabled.

Method 2: Take ownership of the drive.

One of the first things I checked was the ownerships status of Documents folder and the parent user folder, and my account has proper ownership of those folders. (this makes it very odd that my account would disappear from the ACL for a folder it still has
    ownership of).

The C:\Users folder is owned by System

The C: drive is owned by TrustedInstaller (possibly due to this being a Win10 upgrade).

I am cautious applying ownership above the c:\Users\%user% level to a user account since it would also affect the OS and software directory trees.

Method 3: Scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner

I have already scanned with the Windows Defender and with Malwarebytes with clean results. I have downloaded the Microsoft Safety Scanner (1.0.3001.0) and performed a full scan and it also found no virus infections.

Proper way to regain ownership of user folders after install

Like you I have just clicked "continue" and then copied what I need. I do not think it is a good idea to try incorporating the old users folders into your new installation in case you pick up some relic from previous installations, I would just copy over what you need to your newly created document and picture folders, etc.

hmm so are you suggesting that I create a new folder on my storage drive and paste the folders that I need in there being careful of which ones I copy?

I guess I'm a little confused over which folders you are meaning, I assumed you meant your old C:\Users\folders that you had kept a copy of but if they are just data folders that is not so bad.

Like Pictures, Documents, Downloads etc. These normally show that prompt. I have my user folder on E: rather than C:
