'Properties' option not accessible in Right Click Menu

I am currently using Windows 10 pro 64 bit having upgraded from Windows 7 pro and I am experiencing a strange problem.

When I right click on a file ( .WAV, .MP3, .JPG, .DOC etc ) in Windows Explorer and then select the 'Properties' option, the expected properties window does not appear. However, if I wait for a few minutes, the properties window will appear !!

I've tried SFC /Scannow but no errors were reported. I've tried a re-boot but it didn't help.....
Scanning with AVG, CCleaner, and 'Advanced System Care' had no effect on the problem.

If I right click on a desktop shortcut, the properties window does appear as normal.

I would really appreciate any help with this annoying problem.... Thanks

    :)

    Windows 10 Command Line Arguments

How are command line arguments specified in Windows 10?

In previous versions of Windows, right clicking on the menu item (either in the Start menu or an icon on the taskbar) would bring up a menu with "Properties" as one of the options. Clicking on Properties would then allow the user to add a command line argument
to the program that was being run. The "Properties" option no longer appears when right-clicking on a start menu item in Windows 10.

    COM ports

It might be helpful to explain what type of device you are looking at to set COM ports.

Normally, if you look in Settings - Devices and left click on the device and select manage. You will see a properties option with will give you access to the COM port settings. Make sure you use the Devices Properties and not just the properties option
on a right click menu. For instance, if it were a printer there would be a properties and Printer properties option...

You can get there by using the Control Panel, Devices and Printers or Settings - Devices and left click select the device.

  4. 'Properties' option not accessible in Right Click Menu

Reading your problem and hits on the net could I ask a couple of questions.

When you right on wav's, mp3s etc are these files by chance stored on an external or networked drive? If so is it possible the drive has suspended?

With regards to your sentence If I right click on a desktop shortcut, the properties window does appear as normal. Do you mean that if you right click on a desktop shortcut the "Context Menus" do not appear or do the "Context menus" appear but they don't include the menu item "Properties".

Asking as there seems to be numerous issues with context menus all being slightly different. I searched "properties window slow to open in context menus Windows 10" and there were hits, some with answers on the Tenforums.

Hi and thanks for replying to my post.

The quoted files (wav, mp3 etc.) are located on my laptop's internal drive.

Right clicking on any of the Shortcuts on my desktop produces the normal Context Menus, all of which which include the Properties option, which is then fully accessible when clicked - as normal.

  7. Great.

When your context menus do open for wav's, mps'3 etc how many entries are in your context menu. I have a very simple machine for testing which has 15 and two are from third parties, Norton and Malware. All the rest appear to be Windows standard.

Nirsoft has utilities to to managing one being ShellMenuView. I assume they work in Windows 10. A quick visit to site will answer this. A warning, most AV's don't like Nirsoft utilities. I haven't had issues and even reported one as a false positive to Norton. Other forum members may have a different take on Nirsoft.

But before we go there lets see if you have a very large set of context menus or just the norm with an AV or two.

'Properties' option not accessible in Right Click Menu

I don't think the Context Menu is over populated - I've included a screen capture of a typical one.....

You can always use Nir Sofer's excellent (and free) ShellExView to see what shell extensions are installed (these drive the "extra elements" in the right-click menu for File Explorer) and then selectively disable those you don't want or like. A great tool!

  10. Willum08 .... Your context menu may not be over populated but there are a lot and you are expressing a concern with the speed. I see Cast to Device and it could be setting something up in background to cast before it presents menu to you. Maybe two of them are interacting in an undesirable way.

The neat thing about the tool I mentioned or the tool Ed mentioned is you can do some diagnostics. Shut off all the extras and see if your issue disappears. Then enable one by one. It would be interesting if you could report back what you find. Could help others.

Thanks Ed and Ken for your replies....I downloaded ShellExView and disabled the 'WinOptomiser' entries and that seems to have cured the problem......Having done some research on 'Cast to Device', it would seem that this is an integral part of a Windows 10 upgrade. It is not a facility which I would use so I disabled it as well.

Thanks again for you help... Much Appreciated !

  12. Great and I should have said I wasn't recommending disabling Cast, just using as example.

Thanks for reporting back what work.
