Windows 10: Prophetic BMJ letter - did this make NHS target for Ransomware attack?

It seems possible that this prophetic British Medical Journal letter from May 10 edition (online May 11, the day before the WannaCry Exploit hit the world) may have focussed the current ransomware attack on UK NHS hospitals:

WannaCry is a worm that spreads by exploit in a weakness found in Microsoft Windows

Does microsoft automatically send update patch to counteract malware that crippled UK NHS(ransomware)? If not, what must one do? My system is windows 10 version 1511. Thanks guys.Brian
