Protect your Windows devices against Spectre and Meltdown

    Hi guys,

Recently from two or three days ago, my HP laptop freezes suddenly and I can't do anything except pushing down the power button until the power goes away and it shuts down. When it's freezed the mouse doesn't move and none of the keys works. Is this the effect of so-called spectre or meltdown? Am i affected? The HP is telling me that I will have a bios update in 15 february but until that time what can I do to prevent these freezes? It's frustrating.

  2. amd64-microcode just was presented - in Debian Sid. Makes up a little from the lack of anything from the Insider team.

I don't think this is related, unless there is a newly generated virus/worm that's been deployed to exploit. I've not heard of anything thus far. That's not to say there isn't, though.

You may want to post on this thread to get better exposure: BSOD Crashes and Debugging - Windows 10 Forums

    Good luck to you.

That's nothing new really. Waste of time reading IMO. It's mentioned in the OP here. The AV must change/set a certain key in the Registry before the updates install, otherwise it fails.

Excellent post. I was finally able to find the page providing the fix for my laptop. There are already fixes available for newer pcs. But according to the page a fix for my HP Elitebook 8770w will be available on January 24th. It is reassuring to know that a fix will be available for my pc and at the same time its not reassuring to know that your computer will remain vulnerable until that date!

  7. Stupid question. And where have you registered real attacks Meltdown & Specter?
Microsoft with its patches KPTI destroyed a third of the value of my computer. Another 6 months ago I watched 4k-HEVC 10 bits with output in color space P010. Today barely through NV12 and the fan roars like an airplane. I think there is a frank and insolent collusion between Intel and the software manufacturers with the aim to quickly sell the stale procsors, spur demand and make the whole world buy new equipment. Thieves - that Microsoft, that Intel. Personally, I restore my MSIGT60-2PE system as of December 2017, then I turn off all network interfaces. I'll go to the Internet from the old laptop with Windows 7.

There are known issues with Avast, as some versions can't install MicroUpdates which they used to push out the Fix, I had to force mine , see this post...

ASUS have new BIOS incl the new update for some of their boards. Here is a review and benchmark of a PC running a z370 ASUS board. It looks like us with NVMe is going to take quite a hit *Sad. Benchmark is made with and without new BIOS but with Microsofts newest update.

I see NVidia has driver updates for its graphics cards to cope with Spectre etc. Not seen that mentioned anywhere.

I just read about this today; however I'm a bit lost, basically my windows 7 will be -35% performance (recorded on my Win7, after some of those very patches. Apparently these nice helpful patches are creating a slight slowing of performance to a complete hell for some. Please do post if or not this is taking place with your systems or if it's just me being very unlucky yet again.

There are sites (like MDL) that have already emulated/proved how easy it is to implement Spectre attacks. It's a real threat.

Win 7 users should be aware of it's overall vulnerability rather than be too concerned about performance hits, IMHO.
