Word is not free, but some computers will come with a 30 day trial as a part of Office 365.

Buying Microsoft Word without purchasing Office

OpenOffice (and LibreOffice) does allow you to construct and edit documents that are compatible with Microsoft Office documents, but if you want to purchase Word you certainly can do that.

There are a couple of considerations.

First, Microsoft usually prices things so that buying only one of the components of Office is often hardly less expensive than buying the entire suite.

Second, you may or may not be able to purchase an older version of Office. Microsoft is currently pushing its "software as a service" and would like to have you use Office 365, which is a subscription product. You can, however, still buy the current edition
of Office (or Word) as a stand-alone, install it once and you own it, product. You can also use "Office online" which is actually free. Here's a comparison of the 3 ways to get the current version of Office:
