The world's first announced 5G PC* was revealed at Computex Taipei 2019, marking the inception of a new era in computing. Qualcomm Technologies, a leader in 5G, and Lenovo, a world leader in PCs, joined forces on this breakthrough 5G PC. Named Project Limitless, the PC is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx 5G compute platform, the world's first 7nm platform purpose-built for PCs.

This collaboration between industry leaders ushers in a new generation of Always On, Always Connected PCs** that are designed to deliver the benefits of the unifying connectivity fabric made possible by 5G. It will also open the door to new, transformative user experiences for both consumers and enterprise.

The Snapdragon 8cx, the most extreme Snapdragon ever, offers extreme performance, extreme battery life, and extreme connectivity. It supports immersive user experiences, multi-gigabit data speeds, multi-day battery life***, enterprise applications, and security-rich capabilities. It features the Snapdragon X55 5G modem and Qualcomm Technologies RF Front-end, a comprehensive solution that allows OEMs to bring 5G connectivity to even the thinnest form factor, including PCs. Users can experience peak download speeds of up to 7 Gbps without a Wi-Fi connection or a hotspot.

When this 5G connection works in concert with on-device AI, new and smarter user experiences can become a reality. For instance, users might rely on their 5G PC for real-time translation when conversing with others around the world as users converse in English with their Mandarin-speaking colleagues.

Qualcomm announces 7 Gbps Snapdragon X55 5G Modem

When we announced the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G Modem back in 2016, it was a groundbreaking step forward, setting us on the road to 5G commercialization. It’s since become an essential part of virtually every major 5G trial or launch, helping spearhead 5G adoption globally. Today, over 20 OEMs and more than 20 operators have committed to launching 5G products and services based on our Snapdragon platform.

Now, we’re taking another pioneering leap forward with the launch of the world’s most advanced multimode 5G modem — our second-generation 5G solution, the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem. Snapdragon X55 is designed to accelerate global 5G rollout and bring 5G to a broad range of device categories and applications beyond smartphones, including hotspots, Wi-Fi routers, Always Connected PCs*, laptops, tablets, XR devices and connected cars.Combined with Qualcomm RF Front End solutions, the Snapdragon X55 is designed to support high-power fixed wireless access (FWA) services and equipment.

Flexibility and improved network performance for operators

Snapdragon X55 is designed to provide comprehensive support for 5G NR TDD and FDD, as well as mmWave and sub-6 GHz spectrum. It also supports 5G non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) modes, and 5G/4G spectrum sharing. As a result, devices powered by Snapdragon X55 will offer extensive flexibility to operators for utilizing their spectrum assets to help bring the best connected experiences to consumers. In addition to providing flexibility, 5G/4G spectrum sharing support also helps operators improve network efficiency and capacity. The added full-dimension MIMO (FD-MIMO) support in Snapdragon X55 allows operators to utilize both azimuth (horizontal) and elevation (vertical) beamforming to boost spectral efficiency.

Modem-to-antenna 5G solution

While the modem is at the heart of a wireless device, a significant amount of system-level innovation beyond the modem is needed in order to build a high performance, power-efficient 5G device. A discrete or component-based approach is no longer sufficient for meaningfully addressing the RF design challenges posed by 5G.

Snapdragon X55 is part of a comprehensive modem-to-antenna solution which includes the baseband, RF IC, and complete RF front-end for mmWave and sub-6 GHz. This is imperative in tackling 5G-related design challenges, and uniquely positions us to help OEMs accelerate 5G time-to-launch. This means fewer hurdles to delivering the benefits of 5G — multi-gigabit speeds, low latency, and global scale — to new classes of devices and end users.

Continued 5G and LTE leadership

With Snapdragon X55, we’ve pushed peak speeds to an unprecedented 7 Gbps for download and 3 Gbps for upload, enabling a new era of wireless capability and exciting applications and use cases for consumers and enterprise.

Qualcomm announces new Snapdragon 8cx 5G PC platform at MWC19

It’s official — 5G is here. Qualcomm ushered in this next generation of connectivity by applying 30 years of mobile leadership. 5G is the culmination of years of investment — intensive R&D, standards development, prototyping, interop testing, and product development — and the excitement is evident at MWC19 Barcelona. Multiple flagship 5G phones and devices are now debuting, 5G networks and infrastructure are rolling out, and as a result of this massive industry effort, 5G-enabled experiences will soon be in our hands. Years in the making, this is truly a moment to celebrate.

From inventing the once-thought-impossible technologies needed for 5G to helping create the 3GPP 5G NR specifications that pave the way to global standardization, our team has worked tirelessly and, despite a challenging year, helped make the 5G launch a reality. We were even able to accelerate the release by a year. We’re thrilled to see it all come to life, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience 5G.

Over the last few days, several 5G devices powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform and Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G Modem were announced. I congratulate our customers on these flagship 5G-enabled devices: the LG V50, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G, and ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G. With these smartphones, along with the previously announced Motorola z3 with 5G moto mod and those on the horizon from nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, Sony, and Vivo, the Android ecosystem will be populated with a range of 5G flagship devices in 2019. Our infrastructure ecosystem and operators from around the world are also here in full force, truly making MWC a 5G moment.

5G is purpose-built to deliver multi-gigabit speeds and ultra-low latency, as well as extreme reliability, scalability, and capacity. But even better are the user experiences these technological advancements are unlocking on smartphones — real-time video collaboration, multi-player AR gaming, and near-instant access to cloud services will be the new reality in our 5G world.

Just think about the impact on the apps we use every day. Our simulation shows 5G technology enables up to 10X improvement in download speeds and up to 20X improvement in browsing latency. And as mobile video streaming continues to climb in popularity, 5G will significantly boost this performance too; we can expect streaming 4K videos and higher resolution with 5G versus 1080p with 4G LTE*. As a result, nearly every part of our lives — from the way we shop to how we socialize, communicate, and collaborate online — is destined to be faster, smarter, and more reliable.

These 5G benefits extend to categories and devices beyond smartphones, as well. This includes mobile hotspots like those from HTC, Inseego, and NETGEAR. Fixed wireless access 5G hardware from NetComm and others will bring more choices for fixed broadband. Plus, a new generation of wireless modules from companies like Quectel, Sierra Wireless, and Telit will let inventors build 5G connectivity into all sorts of consumer, enterprise, and industrial applications. And speaking of industrial IoT, today we’ve also announced an ongoing research collaboration on 5G NR with Bosch.

There’s also our new Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G Modem, our second-generation 5G modem, which is designed to enable the next wave of 5G devices coming by the end of this year. Additionally, we announced the world’s first mobile platform with integrated 5G, further reinforcing our role in providing the global mobile ecosystem with the flexibility and scalability needed for broad and fast 5G adoption. These 5G offerings include Qualcomm 5G PowerSave technology to enable smartphones with the battery life users expect today — comparable to that of current 4G LTE devices. For computing, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx 5G Compute Platform will enable the first generation of commercial 5G Always On, Always Connected PCs — making it possible for PC makers to deliver the power and performance of a premium thin and light PC, while offering amazing battery life and transformative 5G experiences to the modern workplace. For the auto industry, the newly announced Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive 4G Platform and the Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive 5G Platform are designed to provide unmatched support for rich in-vehicle experiences and both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside infrastructure (V2I) communication, all aimed at enhancing the driving experience.

Qualcomm to Build Snapdragon 5G SoCs on Samsung 7nm LPP EUV Process

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, today announced the intention to expand their decade-long foundry relationship into EUV (extreme ultra violet) lithography process technology, including the manufacture of future Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G mobile chipsets using Samsung's 7-nanometer (nm) LPP (Low Power Plus) EUV process technology.

Using 7LPP EUV process technology, Snapdragon 5G mobile chipsets will offer a smaller chip footprint, giving OEMs more usable space inside upcoming products to support larger batteries or slimmer designs. Process improvements, combined with a more advanced chip design, are expected to bring significant improvements in battery life.

Last May, Samsung introduced 7LPP EUV, its first semiconductor process technology to use an EUV lithography solution. It is anticipated that EUV lithography deployment will break the barriers of Moore's law scaling, paving the way for single nanometer semiconductor technology generations.

Compared with its 10nm FinFET predecessors, Samsung's 7LPP EUV technology not only greatly reduces the process complexity with fewer process steps and better yield, but also allows up to a 40 percent increase in area efficiency with 10 percent higher performance or up to 35 percent lower power consumption.

"Using 7nm LPP EUV, our new generation of Snapdragon 5G mobile chipsets will take advantage of the process improvements and advanced chip design to improve the user experience of future devices."
