Windows 10: Question: Experiencing Significantly high CPU Usage and Disk Usage at 100% after upgrading...

I noticed after upgrading, I am experiencing constantly at 100% CPU and Disk Usage in Windows 10. What can I do to fix this?

100% High Disk Usage

In the Task Manager, under Performance tab, the disk utilization reaches to 100% due to which system became lagging and unresponsive. It started freezing in few moments and this keeps happening until disk usage reduces from 100%.

Control panel > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings > Processor Power Management > Maximum Processor state.

Also, once I start Chrome 64, it uses lots of cpu and ram to do absolutely nothing.

100% disk usage

First of all, you should not run 2 virus programs. Windows Defender will protect you as good if not better than McAfee.

I would start by uninstalling McAfee and restarting PC.

When the disk is at 100%, what is your CPU% total at this time ???

If it is also high, select the details tab in task manager and find the item using the high CPU%.

SuperFetch could be the issue.

Is windows update running during this high disk usage. Is defender scanning. Is indexer running.

There is also many tasks scheduled in task scheduler such as maintenance that could be running on start up causing high disk usage which could last numerous minutes. The slower your PC is, the longer it will be high disk% usage.

You can look in event viewer and see if any event coincides with the time the disk usage is high%.

Or look in task scheduler under maintenance and other tasks and it will display the last time it ran.

 

Disk usage

I agree with Dave, adding more RAM will not help with a100% disk use. I did see a comment from ONE user that upgrading from 8-12GB did help with random pauses in Office applications (for what ever that knowlege is worth).

You should try to associated the disk use with specific applicatinsin task manager or Resource Manager.
