  1. Question: I can't access network share through IP, but works on FQDN

It's the darndest thing and I can't figure it out so I'm asking. I've got my Win10-pro home server in my HOSTS file to the same IP, but when I navigate to the share at \\10.50.1.50\share I get a Network Error "Windows cannot access \\10.50.1.50\share. Contact your network administrator to request access." But it all works fine when I go to it via the FQDN at \\server\share.

Both list the top-level shares by name, I just can't get into the share itself via IP. Even "map network drive" and I offer the server-admin credentials, nadda.

Additional (maybe relevant) information is that I'm running behind a Ubiquiti ER-X (today's hotfix-2, but issue was present on HF1 also), with my DNS set to AdGuard, and NameServer set to the router's IP. As seen here ER-X Config. And my NSLOOKUP results to the same here: nslookup

Anyone have any thoughts? -- thanks

Why do I care? ... because I want to give the IP share to my brother who's coming in via WireGuard and I don't want to have to tell him to "patch" his HOSTS for my network.

  2. Unable to access website via FQDN or IP

    Hello,

Hoping someone can assist with this mind boggling issue I have at work.

We have a website we're trying to access from within our work network, but for some strange reason we just get the standard "this site can't be reached" error.

I have gone into our Firewall (Sophos UTM 9) and ran some diagnostics through the logging of Web Filtering. I started off by running standard request to Google, Facebook etc. Just to ensure that they were being picked up by the logging and my private IP
address was listed, it was. Great news, I thought, so I then went to the site I need to access, nothing, no logs whatsoever.

This then leads me to only think that the request to this specific site isn't even hitting the firewall and therefore really only leaves DNS (happy for someone to give me some pointers if you think it could be anything else other than DNS related).

I then went into my host file and added the IP address and FQDN there to see if this would work, still no luck...

    Any help is appreciated...

P.s. I can access the site from my personal mobile, I can also hotspot and connect to my phone's internet connection and access the site this way through my work laptop, so it's something within our network that's stopping the connecting.

    Cannot access shared network drive

Personally, I wouldnt use Everyone. If anyone hacks into you, they have full access to everything and can demolish everything on your raid. I would rather set up accounts and access separately for each person. That way, I know who did all that damage. In the end with a little extra work, I feel more secure by using Authenticated Users.

    If this helps.
step 1 create non-microsoft account and without email and address without admin rights
step 2 share a drive or folder to specific user account (if Everyone is listed, remove it)
step 3 set security > add Authenticated Users (if more than 1 account) or add specific users
step 3a remove Everyone from list
step 3b uncheck full control and write for all items listed except SYSTEM and Admin account.
step 4 right click Start > Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares ... to verify settings and change anything else. You can also see the number of connections to each share here.
