Windows 10: [QUESTION] Is there a way to Remote Desktop from a VPN connected laptop to home PC on the...

I work from home on a work laptop running Windows 10 that is VPN-connected to work network. I'm assuming all network traffic goes through the VPN tunnel and out from the work network.

I also have my home PC (where I have my personal email and files and so on).

What I'd like to do run Remote Desktop Client on the work laptop and Remote Desktop to my home PC so my personal stuff is easily viewable on the work laptop during the day.

Remote Desktop server is running on the home PC. I have the computer name (WIN10PRO-001) and the IP address from an"ipconfig" command (192.168.0.27). But the work PC cannot connect to either of those.

Both machines are on the same home wi-fi network.

QUESTION: Is there a way to get the work PC that is VPN-connected to Remote Desktop to my local home PC?

Need help Windows 10 VPN and Remote Desktop Connection

I have a Desktop PC in the office that is running Windows 10 Pro. I've setup a native Windows VPN on the desktop, so that I could Remote Desktop Connect to it through the Internet. It works fine in the office (I can connect to the VPN using my laptop and
then RDC into the PC). However, I have 2 issues:

• When I connect to the VPN and RDC from home (not connected to the same WiFi network) RDC disconnects after 5 seconds.
• The VPN ("Incoming Connections" icon in the Network Adapter window) disappears every time I restart my PC. Therefore I have to recreate the VPN every time I restart my PC.

Please advise, how could I solve this issue? I'll be happy with any support as I've been struggling with this for 2 weeks.

Remote Desktop Connection problems


Have you tried Remote Desktop Connection, to connect from your Windows 10 laptop to your Windows 7 desktop? Try it first, post back and tell how it went.

Some additional help because you mentioned you are a remote newbie *Wink. The windows 7 related tutorials from our sister site the Seven Forums:

1. On Windows 7 desktop, set network location to either Home or Work (I recommend Work):
   • Network Location - Set as Home, Work, or Public Network - Windows 7 Help Forums
2. On Windows 7 desktop, allow incoming remote connections:
   • Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) - Network - Windows 7 Help Forums
3. On Windows 7 desktop, find out its IP address:

4. On Windows 10 laptop, start the Remote Desktop application and connect to the Windows 7 desktop using the IP address from step 3 above (see Part Three in the tutorial):
   • RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC - Windows 10 Forums
   • Notice that although the tutorial is written for Windows 10, it also applies to Windows 7

Try the above, post back how it went.

 

Need help Windows 10 VPN and Remote Desktop Connection

When your using a VPN connection to create an remote desktop connection to your work PC

The RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Server) vill assign you a uniqe port number.

That port number is between 49152 - 65535.

So in order for the remote desktop connection to work, you need to add that port range allong with port 3389, in your firewall allow list

Here is how it works, and the port numbers:

Home PC----3389---VPN ---3389---Company Router/Firewall---3389---RRAS---49152-65535---Work PC
