Windows 10: Question regarding the use of ei.cfg on Windows 10

Prior to Windows 10, if you purchased a computer that had the Home edition of Windows installed on it, there would be a signature in the firmware that indicated that the system shipped with the Home edition of Windows.

If you then booted from Windows install media that had multiple editions of Windows available, Windows setup would not ask you what edition of Windows you wanted to install. It would recognize that the system was originally shipped with the Home edition and would simply go right into installation of that edition even if you had previously upgraded the system to Pro.

To get around this, you could place an ei.cfg in the \sources folder and now Windows setup would prompt for which edition to install.

Out of habit, I always built my boot media with an ei.cfg file on it for this reason. However, I was reading something that made me question the need for this. As a test, I removed the ei.cfg and booted from my media and it still asks me to select the edition of Windows that I want to install.

At this point, I'm just looking for confirmation: Is the ei.cfg truly no longer needed with Windows 10 or are there circumstances where you might still need it?

Tested with Windows 2004 x64 consumer retail media on a system that originally shipped with Win 10 Home and another that shipped with Win 7 Pro

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.
