I feel like I've put it off long enough and am preparing to upgrade in place from Win7 Pro to Win10 Pro. I've migrated my C drive to a bigger SSD (500GB from 125GB) and have backed up all my files and drivers. I have read a lot online but would really appreciate r/Windows10 input on the following:

    1) Do I need to increase my System Reserved (currently is 100MB, 68% free) partition before attempting the upgrade? I wasn't sure if Windows takes care of increasing it to 500MB during the upgrade since this step isn't really emphasized in any guides, just in "if you have problems" advice.

    2) If I try an in place upgrade (keeping files and apps) what does Windows do about programs I have installed on other drives? If I disconnect the drives before upgrading, will they work when I later reconnect them? Or can I leave the other drives with programs connected during the upgrade? Again, I can't find any reference to this anywhere, except someone who suggests disconnecting all drives except C for the upgrade.

    3) Am I better off upgrading directly from the Microsoft site which offers Win10_2004, or using an older version from Rufus, and if so, which version is preferred? Choices are 1709, 1809, 1803, 1909.

I would be really grateful for any input.

In-place upgrade - XP to 10 without losing the apps

Wolfgang, you need at least two steps (Vista & Seven) between XP and 10, the Eight can be bypassed:
    • XP can only be in-place upgraded to Vista, not Seven or later
    • Vista can be in-place upgraded to Seven but not Eight or later
    • Seven can be in-place upgraded to 10
    • Ergo: XP to Vista is a must, as well as Vista to Seven but then you can bypass the Eight and jump to 10

    Win7 to Win10 upgrade issue ... 0xC1900101-0x30017 and then 0x40017

    hi, Andre,

yes, i think my note did say that i already created the bootable ISO on a DVD and started the Win10 upgrade from there. i already contacted the vendor and he gave me a list of Win10 drivers, suggested the bootable ISO upgrade method but did not recommend
    a new BIOS update.

My PC is a ZOTAC CI320none with an Intel processor running a licensed Win7 Home Premium SP1.

Win10 activation using Win7 Product Key upgrading product version variant also

    Dear community,

I recently purchased an HP laptop running Windows 10 Home (pre-installed).

At this point I have an activated Win10 OS running. An upgrade from Win10 Home to Pro or above comes of course with an upgrade fee.

Now, I have read that since November Microsoft supports the use of Win7/8 Product Keys in order to activate Win10.

I have purchased in the past an original copy (physical/boxed DVD) of Win7 Enterprise. Not upgrade but new install copy which of course comes with its own license.

My question is if I can use my Win7 Enterprise Product Key to activate my new laptop's Win10 Home with intentions to upgrade Win10 to Enterprise Edition free of charge considering that if I had a fresh installation of Win7 Enterprise the upgrade to Win10 would
have taken place at the same version variant level i.e. the Win10 Enterprise Edition.

Thanks a lot for any responses.
