    Help!

My computer is not what it should be. I have 8gb ram, but it is being used somewhere I cannot find. Task manager and resource monitor show very high usage (80s and up), but the programs listed are using almost no ram. I have an example in the pictures below. After getting the pictures below, I opened one more tab in chrome (for a total of 2) and chrome closed on its own. It is impossible to do anything right now. The programs open for this example are for android app development, but nothing demanding (no android studio). I have the same problem with other apps open as well.

    RAM used up by nothing

    Hey guys!!

I just bought a new dell XPS 13 with 8 GB RAM

My Laptop seemed to be running pretty slowly.

Upon looking at Task Manager, 80% of my RAM is being used despite the fact that my running applications are only using up 500 MB (SHOULD BE 6.25% of RAM)

I can find any processes that would be sing all the RAM

Please Advise Ram being used up by "nothing" and force closing apps :)

Hi, Task manager RAM total usage and the amount of RAM used by 'exe' files are not the same thing.
Please see these for the beginnings of a complex answer:
Why is the total memory usage reported by Windows Task Manager much higher than the sum of all processes memory usage? - Super User
Why do Resource Monitor and Task Managers total RAM usage not even remotely add up to the total Physical Memory usage? - Super User

I do notice that searchindexer.exe is behaving strangely.
That suggests either that the index data base is corrupt or that it's struggling to process something on disk, for example.
    Try the search troubleshooter
    and
Rebuild Search Index in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

I suggest you do some basic disk checks for starters:
Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) just to verify the disks are ok physically.
Then run chkdsk as appropriate on each disk or partition where something is specified to be indexed.
(See Control Panel, Indexing Options to check that).

Excessive RAM usage may indicate a memory leak, if you find you get a warning about needing to close programs.

You may also wish to consider your page file management- are the settings default or have you set a limit? Is the page file enabled?

The process memory usage shown in the Task Manager screnshot isn't the full usage of the process. In some cases it isn't even close. The "Working set" value shown in Resource Monitor will be closer but includes quite a bit of double counting. Getting total process usage is actually very difficult. There are also some substantial users of memory that are not processes, not all of which are shown in Task Manager or Resource Monitor.

I notice that VirtualBox is running. If there are client operating systems running the memory assigned to them will not be shown in any detailed listing but will be in the total usage.
