Windows 10: RAM upgrade

I think you may lose your dual channel and put everything in a single channel. I would find any brand that has the same timings and voltage if you can't match your brand and timings.

 

Hi guys! The current RAM on my rig is 2 x 8GB GSkill TridentZ RGB PC4-2400 with timings of 16-18-18-38

I'm seeing some Newegg sale but the closest RAM is timing is 15-16-16-35 (same PC4-2400).

I'm really tempted to purchase it but I'd like to clarify it with you guys if I will encounter problems with different RAM timings.

I will try the new and old ram together tonight to see if that works.

The main reason to go for 64bit was for a particular game. Hopefully i can get the ram working.

Ram is new samsung branded ram.

Upgrading RAM

No, that is not possible. If you want to use the more advanced games you need to sell the 610 and buy a higher spec model like the 710, 800, 900, 820 or 920.

 

Are you going to ad more RAM or just change it ? Windows will not object but your BIOS might because of mixed latency. In some cases it will just set all at higher latency but those two obviously have different control chips and that's just a hit and miss affair.
It's best to have a matched set, than same make and model but bought separately.
In any case, reset CMOS/BIOS when you change anything.

 

I'll be adding another pair of 8GB. If I find a pair but with the same timings, will those work? I believe it will but when you mentioned different control chips, it made me doubt myself

 

It should 99% work, You can use: Thaiphoon Burner - Official Support Website Just open EEPROM tab > Read SPD on SMbus # to find most relevant data about present RAM.

I haven't mixed RAM in a few years. If there are problems with it, there are a couple of things that you could try:

Manually set the RAM timings to match the set with higher latencies (larger numbers are worse)

Back off on the timings a tick or two. Some motherboards are less compatible if 4 DIMM slots are filled rather than 2.

You may well not need to do these, but just in case...
