task manager shows "System" as CPU usage spike.

scanned entire laptop with MacAfree latest update, all clean

UPD: I had an opened image in "Photos" win 10 default image viewer. The second I closed it, Spike stoped.

  2. Random CPU usage spikes

    Hello,

User profile corruption can cause high CPU usage as it
opens programs that are not necessary on the background
. To troubleshoot the issue, we suggest
creating a new user account on your computer to see if the same issue will occur on a different user profile. To do this, simply follow the steps below:

    • Select the Start button, then select Settings > Accounts > Family
      & other people
      > Add someone else to this PC.

    • Type a user name, password, password hint, and then select Next.

Should you have further questions, please let us know.

"System" process with high CPU usage

I have exactly the same issue (high CPU usage) on a brand new HP ProBook 440 G5 (i7-8550U, pre-installed Win 10 Pro).

I am pretty sure that there is a problem with audio drivers when the computer wakes up from a sleep mode. I first observed that process flow.exe (audio bloatware provided by HP/Conexant) was consuming (after waking up) ~10–15 % CPU. Here's what I did:

    • I have updated Windows to 1709, build 16229.251 and installed all updates --> Nothing has changed.
    • I have updated BIOS to the latest version provided by HP. --> Nothing has changed.
    • I have run Windows troubleshooting and HP Support Assistant checks --> No problems found, nothing has changed
    • I have manually updated Conexant ISST Audio Drivers (via Device Manager -> Update drivers). Windows installed a newer version. -->
CPU usage by flow.exe has disappeared, but process called System in thread ACPI.sys+0x21cb0 started consuming ~20 % CPU.
    • I have uninstalled all Conexant software&drivers and manually installed generic High Definition Audio Device drivers provided by Microsoft (Driver Date: 21.02.2018). --> ACPI.sys+0x21cb0 still consumes ~20 % CPU.

Same issues are discussed in these threads on HP site:

The result is I cannot use sleep mode (as advised by this post:

Random Cpu system usage after latest win 10 update

"Service Host: Network Service is killing my CPU usage..."

    Hi Malumbo,

High CPU usage can be caused by Malware or conflicting software in the computer. We suggest that you run
Windows Defender to scan your computer for unwanted programs and
System Maintenance Troubleshooter by following these steps:

    • Press Windows logo + S on the keyboard.
    • Type Troubleshooting in the search box.
    • Select Troubleshooting the click View All on the upper left pane.
    • Click on System Maintenance.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions.
With the error DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, this usually happens due to driver issues. Please check for latest Windows updates and have it installed if available. Kindly go to
Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
