Random stuck / lag in keyboard when playing online

Hi, I'm desperately opening this thread hoping that someone can help with an annoying problem that I've been experiencing since I bought my new PC. I've found more people on the internet experiencing similar issues so I think this is not exclusive to me, but the problem was never solved. I've done my best to gather as many info as I can to describe the problem properly.

For the moment, this only happened to me when playing online multiplayer games. In my case, Fortnite via Epic Launcher and CS:GO via Steam. The problem didn't happen when playing several single-player games such as Crysis 1, 2 and 3, AER, Rime... via Steam, Origin...

Problem description: I randomly experience a weird lag with keyboard response. This happens with all the keys that involve character actions: W, A, S, D, Ctrl, Spacebar... After some time playing with no issues, keys start getting stuck experiencing a weird, random lag. It can be half a second, or even more than 10 seconds, not a regular thing. To better describe the issue, here's a tedious example:

I keep "W" pressed > Character walks for 3 seconds > Character stops for 1 second > Character starts moving again > He stops again > I stop pressing "W" > Characters stays still > He starts walking again not because I pressed "W" again, but because the system "remembers" I was pressing "W" for a while after the character stopped > He stops again > I press "W" and "spacebar" > Character stays still > Character suddenly walks and jump system remembers that I pressed "W" and "space" a while ago > Etc.

This happens in a completely random way. Sometimes I play for hours with no issues, sometimes it appears after playing for a while, and sometimes it happens from the beginning. It can last just a few minutes, or it just don't disappear so I have to stop playing for good.

When the problem is happening, it's important to say that mouse keep working perfectly, I can even shoot and kill other players in perfect real time –I've tested it many times, even playing with friends just to make sure–. That's why I know it's not just an internet lag issue.

Other interesting thing is that he "Esc" key, which is used to open the game menu, keeps working perfectly. So it seems that the problem only affects to the keys that involve multiplayer/online functions. Also, if I minimize the game and open any word processor, keys work perfectly.

I've been trying all the next things. with no success:

    1. Restarting PC and the game.

    2. Trying with a different keyboard.

    3. Changing the USB receiver to a different USB port.

    4. Increasing and reducing character speed and delay in "Keyboard properties".

    5. Restarting the computer in a "clean way" disabling as many services and tasks as possible.

    6. Updating drivers of keyboard, motherboard, processor...

    7. Updating Windows.

    8. Making sure to be malware free, anyway I started experiencing the problem even when just Steam was installed, no other software or downloads at all.

    9. Disabling the power saving option in as many hardware and USB ports as possible.

    Now my PC specs:

OS: Windows 10 Pro version 1903 licensed and installed from the official installer

    Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.9 Ghz

Graphic card: XFX Radeon RX 580 XXX GTS Edition OC+ 8GB GDDR5

    RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT Grey 8GB 1x8GB 3200Mhz PC4-25600 CL16 - DDR4

Hard drive: SSD Toshiba OCZ TR200 480GB SATA3

Motherboard: Asus TUF B450M-PLUS Gaming Socket AM4

I would be infinitely grateful for any suggestion or idea of whats happening.

    Thanks in advance!

    :)

  3. Keyboard lag at random

    Hello,

I request you to try uninstalling and reinstalling the Keyboard Drivers.

Step 1: Uninstall the Keyboard Drivers

    • Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard.
    • Click on “Device Manager” from that list.
    • Search for the Keyboard from the device list, right click on it and then select “Uninstall”. On the un-installation window, if you have an option: “Delete the driver software for this device” you may select that and then remove
the corrupted drivers from the computer.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete it and then restart the computer if prompted.
    • After the restart, please go ahead with the next steps to install the latest drivers and check if that resolves the issue.

Update Driver Software from the Manufacturer’s website:

Step 2: Go to the Computer manufacturer’s website and search for the latest Windows 10 drivers available for the Keyboard and then install it by following the instructions given in the website.

If you still have the issue, install the drivers in compatibility mode.

Download the drivers from manufacture's website for Windows 10, if there no drivers available for Windows 10, download the latest driver from the manufacturer’s website and
try installing it in compatibility mode.
Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

    • Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
    • Right-click on the driver setup file and click on
      ‘properties’
      .
    • Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box
‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select the operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation.
    • Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

I hope this helps you. If you have any further query in future, feel free to contact us. We will be happy to help you.

Random stuck / lag in keyboard when playing online

BG processes cause keyboard shortcut lag

    Update, as of 12/5/15

After considerable experimentation it appears that the lag will occur when a STORE or (system) SETTINGS app (Calculator, for example) or "store" itself is listed in Task Manager background processes. Kill the process, and the lag vanishes. When the app is actually running, it is listed under APPS, not background processes. Then at random times, often after a sleep cycle or at boot, it will spontaneously appear as a background process - Calculator, Store and possibly others.

Speculated causes of this annoyance are discussed in this article and its embedded links... https://superuser.com/questions/426947/slow-windows-desktop-keyboard-shortcuts/957210#957210 where "Helen" posted a workaround...

Disable SUPERFETCH. Click START, type "services", <enter>, double-click on SUPERFETCH. Stop it. Disable it.

No performance hit has been noted by doing so, and shortcuts launched via keyboard no longer lag. Fingers crossed.
