Windows 10: Random USB sound connecting and disconnecting from my PC

Hello, I am in need of some help. Recently I have noticed it more, but randomly my computer makes the sound of something disconnecting from it. I have a tower so it isn't due from moving, and nothing that is plugged in quits working when it happens. The issue with connect/disconnect sounds could be due to the following:

• USB hub problem.
• Loose mouse, keyboard, monitor or USB connector
• Outdated software drivers
• Sound settings

We would like to know more information:

• Have you done any changes on your computer prior to the issue?
• Have you checked if your devices are plugged/connected properly to your computer?
• Is the issue happening when playing an specific game only?
• What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

Random USB connect/disconnect sound (2023)

1) See if you can System Restore to a point before the problem started: How to use System Restore on Windows 10

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began like a time machine. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started. If System Restore is not enabled on C drive do that now so it's available in the future.

If the problem repeats or System Restore doesn't work then check which Windows Updates were installed at Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Update History, uninstall them there or System Restore again, then immediately check for and block the Updates with the Hide Updates tool explained here: Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10

3) Update the chipset from the PC or motherboard manufacturer's Support Downloads web page for your exact full model number, Serial number or Dell Service tag.

4) Try disabling USB Selective Suspend in Settings > Display > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, under 'USB settings', under "USB selective suspend setting' set it to 'Disabled'.

5) If that does not resolve the sound effect, in Device Manager, open and uninstall each USB controller driver. To restart PC first program the power button to Shut down the PC at Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > Choose what Power buttons do. Restarting the PC will reinstall the drivers which can solve USB problems including this issue.

USB disconnect sound

Keyboard, mouse, USB HDD. Since the mouse and keyboard don't seem to be affected, I suspect the HDD. I will disconnect it and see if that solves the problem.

There is no reconnect sound, just disconnect.

I did what you suggested. It is definitely the USB HDD. When I rebooted this morning, Macrium Reflect started a backup to the HDD, and I heard USB disconnect sounds almost continuously -- about once a second. The Macrium backup failed with "Backup aborted! - Write operation failed - The device is not ready."

I connected the drive to a different USB port on the same computer, but the disconnect sounds continued.

I moved the drive over to a laptop. There were no USB disconnect sounds. I was able to run a full Macrium Reflect backup on the laptop with no problems. Right now, I am running a SMART test on the backup, but it's taking forever.

Could it be a problem with USB? Or an out-of-date driver? I'm embarassed to say that I have no idea how to check for a driver update. This is an 8TB Western Digital Elements desktop drive.
