There's a bit more from Microsoft on the patches for XP and Windows 8 (that is, Windows 8.0, which is out of support unlike 8.1) here.

Although Vista is now out of support too, I guess it was still in support when the patches for this bug came out and hence not mentioned because there should be a patch available already.

    Hi there

    Interesting stuff --thanks

Would be interesting since the NSA was messing around with this stuff and let the cat out of the bag -- to get the NSA / US Federal Govt to pay compensation to people effected by this -- after all it was their tinkering that opened this loophole and they were unable to keep a lid on it.

I hope ms itself submits an invoice too -- it must have had loads of people retro-fitting XP and W2003 server -- surprised anybody knows how those old systems even work from an internals point of view any more.

Should be an interesting Lawyers fest once this is all over !!!!.

    Cheers

Just been doing the same on this laptop, having read this and also this TechNet article (which was linked from the Register post).
    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/...op-using-smb1/

I do wonder how many other bits of Windows are sitting there running and enabled (and possibly giving a risk) which I don't know about and am unlikely to need. I certainly didn't know what SMB1 is before today (and still don't know much now).

If you're on a fully patched Windows 10, then you are protected against this attack. Still, it doesn't hurt to have some protection. Confirmed by this article.

So much for those "Annoying" windows updates and security patches. Or insisting on using "beautiful" but obsolete and unsupported OS.

Agreed NSA were messing about with computer operating systems, but for reasons such as cyber warfare, and all that it entails regarding National Security......blame WikiLeaks for its release in the wild.
